 Hello  friends,

Been  pondering  over  building  a  low  tech  planted  tank  for  quite  some  time.  Finally  got  the  courage  to  scape  one  with  some  regular  amazons,  cabombas  and  a  few  unknown  to  me  plants  got  from  nearby  water  sources  of  the  Himayat  Sagar  lake  in  Hyderabad.  Courage  required   as  I  was  about  to  strip  my  discus  tank  and  do  what  I  about  to  do.

Here  are  a  few  shots  of  the  scape  -  starting  with  the  one  made  a  month  back  with  only  amazons  and  cabombas,  and  going  on  to  rescape  it  with  the  natives  from  Himayat  Sagar.

 Tank  size:  5ft  x  2ft  x  1.5ft
 Substrate:  River  sand
Light:  Philips  domestic  tube  light   Chuckle
Filter:  Sobo  top  filter,  2000  ltrs  per  hour

 4  Discus  -  4  inches,  3.5  inches  2  of  them  and  2.4  inches  1
 12  Serpae  Tetras
 2  Neon  Tetras
 2  Synodontis  catfish

Plants:  Amazon,  Cabomba  and  need  ID  on  the  rest

 Hi..

 nice  start..!!
Give  your  discus  a  barebottom  tank  till  they  become  5"-6"..
your  wood  has  a  nice  texture  ...the  big  stone  on  the  right  needs  adjustment  ,  it  is  blocking  the  wood....

 good  luck..!!

@Rohit  -  Thanks.  ORR  second  round  is  on.

@Suhail  -  Readjusting  the  right  side  stone  is  a   Thumb Up  .  Will  be  done  tonight  itself.  As  for  barebottom,  will  certainly  go  back  that  way  as  before  if  I  find  even  the  slightest  discomfort  amongst  the  kings!  Thanks  mate!

So  simple  but  superb  tank..  The  drift  wood  is  very  nice  and  has  good  structure....  Rock  arrangement  could  be  re-done  to  give  good  look  to  the  tank..   Thumb Up

Thanks  Shelly.  Could  you  help  me  out  with  the  rock  scaping  a  bit...  suggstions  would  be  highly  welcome.  Only  the  two  flat  stones  on  the  bed  should  be  kep  as  it  is  as  the  uneaten  food  if  any,  drops  on  them  instead  of  the  gravel.  Hence  the  pellets  are  visible  and  I  can  siphon  them  off  right  off  those  big  stones  :)

Thanks  Kishore  for  liking  the  simplicity.  That  was  the  idea.

your  susbtrate  needs  to  be  changed,  a  mix  of  laterite(fertilizer  free)-70%+humus10%+coco  peat-20%  to  form  a  base  of  about  3/4  to  1  inch  topped  with  river  sand/golden  sandof  atleast  1.5"  is  the  minimum  i  would  recommend,  start  by  planting  densely  instead  of  sparse  planting  as  dense  platning  will  take  care  of  algae  issues  that  pop  up  when  a  tank  is  planted  sparsely.
plant  chioces.  Remove  the  amazon  as  it  will  take  up  all  the  nutrients  from  the  soil  depriving  other  plants  of  nutrition.

 foreground-
 1)E.tennelus
 2)marselia  hirsuta

midground  and  back  ground  choices  can  be  varied  according  to  your  scape.  Some  good  back  ground  plants  for  a  low  tech  tank  include  crypts,  vallisneria  etc..

Thanks  for  the  advice  Mudassir.  My  idea  is  to  retain  the  current  substrate  and  try  base  level  plants.  Would  want  to  replace  the  amazons  for  sure  but  not  getting  a  good  variety  of  plants.  All  I  get  is  amazons  and  cabombas.  Not  even  vallisnerias  are  available.  Havent  been  able  to  visit  a  few  distant  places  though.  Any  pointers  would  be  helpful.
