Hi  guys...

all's  fixed  and  done...  just  waiting  for  the  silocone  to  dry.

the  new  pane  was  fixed  on  Saturday  night  ...  and  now  its  approx  40  hours  since  its  been  drying  there.

i  checked  this  morning  before  i  left  to  work  by  pulling  the  new  glass  upwards  to  see  if  its  solid  dried,  but  i  could  see  the  silicone  move  a  bit  beneath  the  glass  on  the  sides'  edges  (as  if  it  were  still  wet).

I  posted  =http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=25571#25571]this  new  thread  on  the  silicone  i  used:

Hi  all...

i  wanted  to  know  which  is  the  best  silicone  sealant  to  use  for  building  Aquarium  Tanks

This  question  arises  after  i  just  repaired  my  4'  tank's  broken  front  pane.
=http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=2958](click  here  to  visit  that  thread)

the  one  i  used  was  a  brand  called  "CHEMMER"

it  said  'germany'  on  the  tube  so  i  bought  it  and  fixed  a  new  pane  to  my  broken  tank  ...  it's  transpatrent  white.
i  noticed  the  fine  print:  "made  as  Germany"  only  after  i  applied  and  was  counting  hours  until  i  can  start  testing  it..

it  still  doesnt  seem  to  have  cured  as  i  check  by  lifting  the  pane  to  see  if  the  silicone  on  the  edges  where  the  pane  is  resting,  is  still  wet?  and  still  seems  it  is.

also  would  like  to  know  how  elfy  silicone  (http://elfy.com/)  is?  i  saw  that  at  a  hardware  store  and  said  its  an  premier  indian  brand!  would  it  have  been  better  than  the  "chemmer"  brand  i  used?

well,  waiting  for  your  replies  with  my  silicone  covered  fingers  crossed!

 replies  would  be  appreciated...again  Smile

 btw,  here  a  pic:

dum  dee  dum....  really  hate  the  waiting  game!  more  anxious  than  curious!

Wacker  is  just  another  brand  of  silicone...  you  don't  have  to  add  anything.

Don't  do  anything  to  your  current  tank...  silicone  does  not  bond  to  silicone.

i  have  to  apply  the  last  coat  of  silicone  to  the  inside  corners,  so  do  u  suggest  i  use  another  brand  for  this,,,  like  the  ones  u  mentioned  -  dow  corning  /  wackers?

 say  what?

ive  got  a  new  tube  of  elfy,  if  u  think  thats  ok  to  use...

 @shaji,
elastosil  is  a  product  from  the  company  'wacker'
and  glass  sealent  is  a  product  from  the  company  'dow  corning'
both  are  acitic  cure  sealents  -  the  glass  sealent  sets  fast  so  is  convinent  to  use  for  small  tanks  and  the  elastosil  has  a  longer  setting  time  and  allowes  you  an  extra  tooling  time  for  big  or  jumbo  tanks  Thumb Up

IMO,  the  joint  is  all  that  matters  the  stronger  the  bond  the  better  results.
The  second  coating  is  just  for  finishing  or  smoothing    the  joint  -  I  don't  recommend  any  other  brand  of  silicone  to  be  mixed  with  the  sealent  you  have  used  -  go  ahead  and  use  the  same  tube  -  But,  WATER  TEST  the  tank  before  installing  it  in  your  house.

there  u  go,  finally  put  the  stand  up  in  the  garage  and  filled  it  up...  its  almost  been  48  hours  and  still  no  leaks....  but  there  is  a  small  issue  i  wanted  to  clarify.....

what  u  see  inside  are  some  river  stones  and  an  Amethyst  Geode  which  i  mined  up  a  cpl  of  years  ago.  think  i  can  keep  open  geodes  inside  my  marine  aquarium?

 ok...  he's  my  issue:

see  the  silicone  glue  through  the  glass?  either  its  white  in  some  places  or  transpatent  in  others:

the  sides  of  the  front  glass  which  are  stuck  on  the  side  glass  edges...
 is  that  normal?

im  asking  just  to  take  the  most  caution...  dont  want  it  breaking  and  letting  go  and  screw  up  the  carpets  inside!

 Shaji
PS:  i  was  also  wondering  if  anyone  sticks  a  vinyl  transparent  sheet  on  their  aquarium  glass  just  incase  it  cracks,  to  prevent  it  from  exploding,  i.e.

Difficult  to  comment  without  physical  inspection!  But  the  colour  variation  seems  to  have  come  from  the  quality  of  the  "silicone  sealants"  used.

Life  of  those  joints  may  be  short!  So  it  may  be  a  better  idea  to  replace  the  side  with  a  better  quality  stuff    Crying or Very sad  .  You  may  have  little  option  once  you  populate  the  tank.

Considering  the  scaling  and  deposits  that  can  arise  from  seawater,  in  your  Amethyst  Geode;  especially  with  the  multiple  crevices  and  crannies-which  will  make  it  near  impossible  to  clean;  I  would  rather  prefer  it  to  be  a  show  piece  out  side  the  aquarium!

Apart  from  this  the  geode  is  most  probably  inert  and  will  not  pose  any  other  problem,  provided  it  is  not  sharp  -so  as  to  hurt  the  fish.

I  don't  forsee  problems  with  River-stones  either,  but  either  porous-rocks  or  live-rocks  may  be  better  option.

I'd  worry  about  fish  cutting  themselves  on  the  geode...

The  milky  white  curing  of  the  silicone  means  that  the  silicone  you  used  was  contaminated  with  the  white  acrylic  stuff  used  for  sealing  bathrooms.

Thre  was  a  lot  of  this  duplicate  stuff  going  around  Bangalore  last  year  and  many  tanks  failed.

Redo  your  complete  tank,  or  else  have  a  failure  shortly  again.

 daggammit!  not  again  Sad

today's  the  third  day  and  the  curing  seems  to  be  staying  put...  no  leaks  and  no  more  white  marks!

anyway,  is  the  way  to  know  that  the  curing  has  been  done  well  is  to  see  no  white  marks?

thanx  for  the  amethyst  geodes  advice!
