I  am  into  the  planted  aquarium  hobby  around  a  year  and  have  kept  aquariums  from  childhood.  My  planted  tank  is  preety  good  and  flourishing,  the  only  problem  since  the  setup  i  am  facing  is  just  I  am  not  able  to  grow  carpet  plants,  have  tried  hands  on  many  plants  and  moss  but  to  my  disappointment  i  always  fail.   Crying or Very sad   Sad  and  then  again  i  try  and  spend  money.  but  never  succeeded   Sad

 Tank  Specs.

 size:
 5  feet  X  1.5  feet  X  2  feet

 and  Contro  Soil

 Lighting:

Light  is  not  the  only  factor  you  need  to  look  into,  Couple  of  Questions

 1.  Is  2  Feet  the  height  of  your  tank?
 2.  What  foreground  plants  have  you  tried?
 3.  How  are  you  diffusing  the  CO2?  Do  you  know  the  CO2  levels  in  your  tank?
 4.  You  mentioned  that  you  tried  even  Moss  and  did  not  succeed,  Moss  is  the  easiest  plant  to  keep,  The  only  thing  that  can  hamper  that  is  temp.  What  is  the  temp  of  the  water  in  your  tank?
 5.  You  have  not  mentioned  any  dosing.  Do  you  dose  any  ferts?

sry  the  perfect  height  of  the  tank  is  1.7  feet.

for  the  foreground  i  have  tried  glosso,  cuba,  HC,  brasalian  grass  (  LFS  guy  calls  that)  Ricca  tied  to  moss,  christmas  n  java  moss  tied,  and  few  more.

co2  diffusion  is  through  Insta  MaxMix  Co2  reactor  and  i  have  a  co2  checker  which  says  co2  is  perfect  in  ma  tank.  there  is  load  of  oxygen  bubbling  from  my  tank,     clearly  visible  from  the  plant   Smile  I  have  also  tried  ladder  diffuser,  ceramic  diffuser  and  also  tried   air  stone  and  wooden  stone  (  when  it  was  DIY  Co2)  soo  far  insta  gives  best  result  for  me.

the  temp  maintained  in  around  27-28  in  summers  and  now  itz  around  25.  (  my  tank  is  in  my  compound,  next  to  ma  parking  soo  difficult  to  maintain  the  temp  in  summers.   Sad   Sad   Sad

yes  i  dose  leaf  zone  fertilizer  from  the  very  1st  day.....  i  dose  according  to  the  instruction  on  the  bottle  divided  by  7,  so  daily  dosing  of  ferts.  at  water  change  i  use  API  stress  coat  and  rarely  if  water  change  is  not  possible  i  use  Ammo  lock.  in  the  begining  when  there  was  algae  boon  i  used  algefix  from  api.

any  help  for  keeping  tank  cool  in  summers  will  also  b  appreciated.  Am  also  looking  for  information  on  electronic  co2  diffusion  that  works  on  timer.   Smile

 thanks   Smile

What  is  the  current  lighting  in  your  tank?
I  was  able  to  grow  flame  moss  even  in  my  planted  low  tech  setup,  without  CO2.  So  there  must  be  some  reason  why  moss  is  not  growing.Do  you  see  something  out  of  place?
 Like  algae  bloom  or  something?
I  am  not  an  expert  but  there  is  something  wrong  definitely.
Wait  for  the  experts  to  rush  in  ,  also  read  online  and  this  forum,  there  is  a  huge  amount  of  info  on  carpet  plants.

4  *  28W  T5's  is  the  current  lighting  of  the  tank.

i  might  add  30  W  LEDS  and  check  the  result.

everything  is  at  its  place...  and  the  plants  are  pretty  much  healthy  and  flourishing,  no  signs  of  unhealthy  water  or  fish  or  plants.

there  was  algae  boom  in  the  initial  stage,  but  with  the  proper  dosage  of  algaefix  for  1  week  it  was  controlled  and  i  introduced  ottos.  so  that  problem  is  also  solved.

thanks.  m  reading  and  getting  info  only   Thumb Up

 Hi  Jaival

As  per  my  experience,  I  can  advise  the  following..

Tank  length  is  5  feet.  Since  the  flow  from  2217  cannot  push  the  water  to  the  other  end  of  the  tank,  I  suggest  that  you  add  a  powerhead  on  the  other  side  of  the  tank.  This  will  ensure  that  there  is  enough  water  circulation  which  in  turn  ensures  even  CO2  distribution  throughout  the  tank.  Make  sure  that  this  circulation  doesn't  disturb  the  water  surface.  CO2  drop  checkers  only  calculate  based  on  the  pH.  The  GH  (  Water  hardness  )  also  plays  an  equal  role  in  calculation  and  therefore  you  need  a  test  kit  for  the  same  too.

The  wattage  of  the  T5's  that  you  are  using  is  around  120W.  Your  tank  is  about  450  liters  which  works  out  to  over  100  gallons.  If  you  calculate  as  per  watts  per  gallon  ratio,  you  need  about  300-400  watts  of  light  for  this  tank  to  grow  carpet  plants  like  glosso  at  the  carpet  level.  If  your  glosso  was  growing  vertical  earlier,  there  was  insufficient  light  penetration.

Fertiliser  dosing  is  very  important.  To  calculate  this,  you  need  some  experience.  You  need  to  check  the  bio-load  of  the  tank.  If  there  are  too  many  fishes,  size  of  the  fish  is  important,  feeding  and  amount  of  food  lying  uneaten  at  the  bottom  which  will  eventually  rot,  all  this  contributes  to  the  calculation.  As  per  the  Estimative  Index  you  need  to  dose  Micros  and  Macros  at  a  very  high  level  for  your  450  ltr  tank.  Use  a  calculator  made  by  Chuck  Gadd  to  calculate  the  minimum  dosage  of  Macros  required.  If  you  are  using  branded  products,  as  per  this  calculation,  you'll  be  requiring  about  40ml  of  Macros  being  dosed  thrice  a  week  and  40  ml  of  Micros  with  a  similar  frequency.

Search  for  all  these  subjects  in  earlier  forums  on  IAH,  and  I'm  sure  all  your  problems  will  be  solved

 Regards

 Sandeep

ok  the  powerhead  is  inn...  i  just  fixed  it....  will  get  the  test  kit  soon.....

can  LED  light  will  solve  my  purpose....  i  am  planing  to  get  LED  lights,  so  that  will  make  around  30-40  W  light  in  the  front  part  where  i  plant  to  grow  carpet  plant.

my  live  stock  is  pretty  much  low.  8  small  angles,  few  neons,  few  ottos,  few  corys,  and  14  valoon  redeye  tetra.  i  feed  them  just  what  they  can  consume  it  in  30-40  seconds.  and  twice  a  day.  i  dose  my  frets  daily.  10  ML  i  just  use  API  LEAFZONE  produce.

 Thanks  Smile

For  such  big  tank,  you  would  require  6  nos  of  T5HOs  of  54w  each  to  grow  carpet  plants.

BTW,  API  LeafZone  contains  Potassium  &  Iron  only,  do  you  use  any  other  fertz  apart  from  this?  If  not,  you  require  full  range  of  macro  &  micro  fertz.

 Which  trace  elements?
BTW,  Trace  Elements  are  micro  nutrients.
