Yesterday,  I  made  a  comeback  to  flowerhornkeeping  by  buying  ADOLF,  the  2"  fader  flowerhorn.

Today,  I  bought  RUDOLPH,  the  2"  Red  Dragon  Zhenzhou-Malau  flowerhorn.

This  little  guy  reminds  me  of  my  first  Red  Dragon  Zhenzhou-Malau  that  I  bought  2  years  back  (  the  one  in  my  Avatar  ),  but  has  a  much  better  flowerline  with  an  interrupted  second  row.  I  am  almost  positive  that  this  guy  is  a  male.

He  is  currently  heavily  Ich  -  ridden  and  in  my  2.5  Gallon  hospital  tank.

Here  are  a  couple  of  pics  and  videos  shot  using  my  new  Nokia  C2-00  VGA  camera.

Will  update  when  I  get  back  my  camera.

Brings  to  mind,  the  good  old  days.

My  old  Red  Dragon  Zhenzhoumalau  for  comparison:

 1.  When  he  was  a  Juvenile,  being  chased  by  the  larger  female  Blue  Dragon  Zhenzhou.

Link

 2.  When  he  grew  up  and  bred  with  the  same  Blue  Dragon  female

Link

 3.  Few  months  before  his  tragic  death  due  to  failure  of  Aerator

Link

After  his  death,  I  lost  interest  in  the  remainig  flowerhorns,  gifted  two  to  my  friend  and  cousin  and  sold  the  remaining  two  females  along  with  their  entire  setup  to  Discusrama.

Let  us  see  how  ADOLF  and  RUDOLPH  grow  up.

Well,  here  are  some  clearer  pics  of  Rudolph  in  the  hospital  tank.

The  colours  have  been  masked  due  to  the  methylene  blue  in  the  water.

 Videos  are  being  uploaded.

 I  didnot  predict  a  hump.

I  choose  my  fish  based  on  the  colouration,  finnage  and  bodyform.  The  kok  is  always  a  bonus.  A  fish  with  vibrant  fluorescent  colours,  deep  bodyform  and  erect  flowing  finnage  needs  no  hump.

However,  looking  at  his  bodyform  (  comparison  with  my  earlier  Indo  ZZs.  I  have  raised  10  in  all  ),  I  expect  Rudolph  to  be  a  male  (  I  haven't  vented  him  )  and  expect  him  to  have  a  kok  in  the  future  based  on  his  lineage  and  strain  (  every  male  Indo  Zhenzhou  a.k.a.  Red  Dragon  Zhenzhoumalau  develop  a  hard  hump  or  kok  sooner  or  later  in  life.  The  same  cannot  be  said  about  a  Blue  dragon  zhenzhou.  What  I  have  learnt  is  that  the  key  to  keeping  Zhenzhoumalaus  is  to  have  patience.  Since  these  guys  have  a  hard  kok,  it  takes  time  to  develop  and  grow.  The  kok  first  begins  to  appear  around  6  months  of  age  and  then  keeps  growing  slowly  in  size  throughout  life  depending  on  other  factors.  Most  guys  sell  off  their  fish  at  around  a  year,  since  they  expect  a  larger  kok.  It  is  like  expecting  a  10  year  old  human  kid  to  develop  six  pack  abs.  If  they  wait  long  enough,  they  can  experience  the  making  of  a  masterpiece.   ).  What  can't  be  predicted  is,  the  rate  of  growth  and  size  of  the  kok.

Some  female  Zhenzhoumalaus  also  develop  a  kok,  like  the  female  I  sold  to  Discusrama.  I  believed  her  to  be  a  male  until  she  started  laying  eggs.  Below  is  her  video  and  pic.

 Binesh

Adolf  (  pic  below  )  is  a  Fader  BDZZ

while  Rudolph  is  a  RDZZmalau,  and  definitely  not  a  fader.

Thats  the  verdict  of  the  guys  at  Monsterfishkeepers.com  and  Flowerhornusa.com.

You  will  appreciate  it  on  seeing  the  updates  on  Adolf.

Fading  is  a  trait  passed  down  from  the  Ampilophus  ancestors  of  the  flowerhorns  and  follows  Mendelian  laws  of  inheritance.

Rudolph  is  now  almost  clear  of  the  ich  and  has  been  transferred  to  the  3G  Acceleration  tank  with  no  other  medication  except  twice  the  usual  salinity  and  4  times  80%  water  changes  per  day.
Once  he  has  completely  recovered,  by  this  weekend,he  will  be  transferred  in  the  partitioned  tank  with  Adolf.

RUDOLPH  is  now  completely  rid  of  Ich.

Its  time  to  grow  and  develop  now.

He  has  been  shifted  into  ADOLF's  tank,  separated  by  a  Mesh.
