Tried  clicking  these  fast-moving  bimacs  with  'Sports'  mode,  can  photogrpahy  experts  conclude  what  have  gone  wrong  with  these  pictures?  Sad

Yogesh,  you  could  increase  the  aperture  and  ISO.  Will  give  you  the  opportunity  to  increase  shutter  speed.
Of  course,  this  would  have  to  be  in  a  Manual  mode.

 Thanks  Shubh  &  Madan.
Will  check  my  PnS  if  I  can  fiddle  with  its  settings.

Does  exposure  variation  /  compensation  settings  on  a  P&S  affect  shutter  speeds  or  is  it  something  unrelated  to  shutter  speed?

 Ranjit,

Phew,  that  was  a  tough  question.  And  I  had  to  go  through  quite  a  few  books  and  googles  to  answer  that!
 The  answer  is  three  tiered....

 1)  The  number  in  a  camera  called  EV  means  exposure  value.  Exposure  variation  or  exposure  compensation  means  the  judgement  of  the  user  or  the  camera  programme,  on  which  setting  of  EV  is  the  best  for  that  particular  capture.

 2)  EV=log2  N2/t
Where  N  is  the  F-number  (Smaller  the  F-number  larger  the  aperture)
Where  t  is  the  shutter  speed.
Hence  if  you  change  the  F-number  and  EV  you  will  in  effect  change  the  Shutter  speed.  In  P&S  cameras  with  aperture  priority  modes  I  can  do  it.

 3)  Ranjit,  Here  I  am  thinking  aloud  on  how  to  do  it  in  P&S  where  Aperture  priority  mode  is  not  available.  So  what  we  will  have  to  do  is  set  EV  on  the  highest  value  and  "Flood  light  the  aquarium  using  a  table  lamp  or  some  such  means".  The  camera  sensor  in  a  point  and  shoot  will  then  be  fooled  into  keeping  a  high  shutter  speed  (eg>.001sec),  but  higher  F-number.  Like  I  said  before,  I  am  just  thinking  aloud  and  might  be  wrong.  Smile
You  will  have  to  try  it  out.

yesterday  being  a  Sunday,  finally  afforded  me  some  free  time  to  laze  in  front  of  my  tanks.

Resulted  in  me  putting  a  bit  of  what  I  had  learnt  in  Aquatika  2011  to  practise.

The  experiments  with  white  balance.  I  had  a  tank  which  got  direct  sunlight  at  a  certain  time  of  the  day.  Here  you  go.  Check  the  difference.....

 Camera-Sony   DSC   H-5
 Date:   03-July-2011
 Flash:  Not  Used   EV:   -0.3
 Focal   length-   19.8mm
 Exposure:   1/6(0.167)Sec
 F   number:   f/3.5
 White   balance-    Fluorescent
 Metering   mode:   Center   weight
 Exposure   program:   Shutter  Priority
 ISO:   100

 Camera-Sony   DSC   H-5
 Date:   03-July-2011
 Flash:  Not  Used   EV:   -0.3
 Focal   length-   19.8mm
 Exposure:   1/6(0.167)Sec
 F   number:   f/3.5
 White   balance-    Daylight(Manual)
 Metering   mode:   Center   weight
 Exposure   program:   Shutter  Priority
 ISO:   100
Now  what  happened  here  is  that  in  the  first  picture  the  image  has  got  a  darker  tone.  Garishly  green  moss  and  bluish  tinge  to  the  water.  In  the  second  picture  the  color  is  natural  and  as  would  be  visible  to  naked  eye.  Hmmm,  exciting.  Need  more  experiments.

Of  course,  not  all  the  experiments  will  produce  the  desired  results.  But  a  intelligent  person  can  always  claim  the  results  produced  as  what  he  had  always  aimed  for.  Take  the  next  picture  for  instance,
This  is  what  I  wanted  all  along,  when  I  tried  to  reduce  the  flash  by  holding  my  finger  in  front  of  it!!!!   Halo
 Hayath,  are  you  listening?  Innocent

 Regards,

I'm  quite  confused  with  the  third  photo,  just  the  hands  visible.  Where  is  the  rest  of  you.  Is  it  the  algae  background  in  a  BB  tank.

Saurabh,  I  held  my  finger  around  1  inch  in  front  of  the  flash  to  diffuse  light.  What  happened  here  was  the  light  got  reflected  off  my  finger  thereby  illuminating  my  hand,  which  in  turn  got  reflected  off  the  front  glass  of  my  aquarium.  Since  I  was  using  the  LCD  instead  o  the  Electronic  view  finder,  I  was  standing  a  bit  away  from  my  camera.  Hence  I  am  invisible.  Yes,  It  is  a  BB  tank  and  that  is  a  driftwood  covered  in  BG  algae.

Hayath,  That  redness  you  see  is  B-ve.  The  true  blue  blood  Chuckle

Next  experiments  are  on  back  blackground..errr....black  blackground...err......back  background....  Wall Bang   Wall Bang
