hello guys,
i am in confusion choosing the best algae eating fish / shrimps for planted ones, as some reviews says Otocinclus are better than Siamese algae eaters, becoz they tend to eat java moss, is that true ? anyone having better knowledge in this, please guide me..
I also heard abot amano shrimps, are they good algae eaters?

I'd advice keep a mix of both.A few otocinclus and SAE.
RCS are also fond of algae too.I havent yet heard of any instance of SAE's eating java moss.
The only thing to be kept in mind - Dont feed them too often. My SAE's refused to even touch any algae after they tasted frozen worms |

SAE loose taste for algae as they grow and eventually start enjoying fish food. Also, once they grow big!
I have had close to 50 cherry red shrimps in a 8G tank and did not find them to be very useful!
IMO, a cleaning crew of amano shrimps and ottos would work best!
I'd say maybe 3-4 ottos and amano in a 28G tank would do the trick! |

if you can get your hands on, buy american flag fish instead.these will even devour the algae that any other fish refuse to eat. |

Depends on the size of your tank. But as mentioned Ottos and Amano shrimps are best. |

SAE are good but they grow too fast. The same applies to golden alage eaters too. Ottos are among the best and a large bunch of shrimps. Nerite snails are the best but they keep laying eggs on the glass and diftwood leaving that no issues with them.
Thanks,
Ryel |

I've personally seen SAE nip at all the moss buds in my tank. The BBA in my tank came under control after I introduced an adult SAE, but had to say good-bye to all my moss. My moss in that tank looks like a bunch of threads, without any micro-leaves on them. |

If i remember correctly The flagfish is a relative of our true black molly. And the Molly is one hell of a Algae Eater!
Its got phenomenal algae devouring skills!!
My vote would go to the molly, as it is really cheap
Apart from that is you dont mind a few dozen snails in your aquarium, add ramshorn snails. They breed alot and oncee you add 5-6 you get 40-50 adults in a month. And they all just eat algae. |

nerite snails would be good but you would need combination as algae comes in combo pack
which ever cleaning crew grows old give them VRS and recruit new and freshers |

there is a fish available that looks like a small pleco. it is called bushynose or bristlnose. it stays around 2-3 inches, plus fins. even one will clean your tank 2 footer tank out like a whistle. some of them are a beautiful shade of yellow, or white, or black with white spots. cute and total algae cleaner. after algae is finished, give it boiled cucumber. so easy! google it! |

While the experts are leaning towards Otos and Amanos , do remember that neither are easily available. They are expensive to buy and not so easy to maintain. Otos will devour algae , but if your tank runs out of algae , you have a new problem.
I suggest also think about what is causing the algae to begin with. High lighting for a long period of time, excess fertilisers etc are some common causes. Also, other than fish, there are plants which also help to keep algae in check by using up nutrients faster than the algae. Hygrophilia Corymbosa is an excellent example.
In my experience , SAE eat algae like demons when they are young and then graduate to French cuisine once they grow old and completely disown algae. However they are very sprightly fish to keep in an aquarium and good companions to most fish. |
