Got these fishes in local fish market. At present I am keeping them in a 1.5 feet tank.
Great fish these are. They are also called as Climbing Gourami in some parts. They can crawl on land when their pond dries up, in search of a new home, using their opercula for leverage. These guys can endure dryness for more thn 24 hours.
These are one of the many native fish who haven't found their rightful place in the hobby, by scale. Keep the water level atleast 10" below the tank brim (which appears to be impractical in your case, due to tank size ) or use a tight fitting lid if you don't want to lose these beauties.
I was looking for them for my native monster setup, long back, but wasn't able to lay my hands on one. If you can ship these to Mumbai, let me know.
man these make me feel nostalgic..
we grew up catching these and small snakeheads from the nearby fields..
good fish to feed..try with a few bugs and critters.
I started my fish keeping with them when i was young. I used to keep them (small size) in the big horlicks bottle and used to feed them all sorts to food and me too feeling nostalgic..
BTW it is called "Koi mach in bengali" and i have seen it climb coconut tree and supari tree ( not very far from the ground though). In the heavy monsoon when the ponds are filled in our area then these fishes used to go from one pond to the other ponds.
We used to catch them with nets and not to forget they make excellent dish as well ( take it on a lighter note!!!).
