I think overdosing the main tank with potassium permanganate with all the equipments running for atleast 5hrs will help. I had a similar issue which killed all my discus, now after the treatment i got some new batch and all seems to be fine. |

If you are serious about this, nuke it. take the tank and equipments outside, wash it down with fresh water, wash it with a anti bacteria soap, soak the filter intakes, insides etc well. rinse it out properly and then wash it down with bleaching powder. wash well and sun dry. |

Emmanuel,
Ruchit has hit the bullseye with the pp suggestion.Ask your friend to overdose the tank and equipments with pp and leave it for as long as he can afford to.The only other concern is probably the fact that certain diseases are airborne and may recontaminate the tank if kept in the vicinity.Isolating the affected equipment by quite a distance(preferably in the other end of the house) should do the trick but to be doubly sure do make it a point to have another round of disinfecting before the final release of healthy fishes.
I do not use any sort of soap for aquarium and its equipment cleaning and I would suggest your friend not to do it either. |

Hi, well after the PP treatment with all the filter equipments, the tank should be as good as new so you will be starting a fresh cycle. It took around 14days for my tank to settle down and then I started adding livestocks. |

The only & best solution is PP treatment which I have done for the same instance when it happened with me last year (I lost 38 Discus in 3 tank).......But go for minimum 72 hrs. which I have done .....your Tank, Net, Filter, Thermostat, Thermometer etc etc....Ruchit & Swarnendu already mentioned the same..... |

Hi Emmanuel, just to say best of luck for your friend. I don't have any idea about this disease. So, I have a question in mind, what are the possible symptoms to judge or identify, plague outbreak in your tank? Please suggest as it will help all the discus lovers to detect and start the treatment as early as possible in case of such problems. |

it looked like it had also effected me in recent time but I could save almost all of them lost two but those two were already stunted.
symptoms are:
blackening
sparingly eating or not eating
stays in huddle probably nearthe water suface
heavy mucus on the fins and clamped fins
rotten fin edges
all of them or most of them together are syptoms of discus black desease
said to be airborne viral infection has a history of wipping out hactheries in matters of days
desease is quite common with all LFS here in Mumbai who are feeding live blood worms
precaution: If you have discus dont bring home any live or frozen aquatic worms sold in the market for any other fish |

Generally wild-caught discus & other fishes are dewormed with proper Quarantine at farms by reputed Sellers in Singapore who source it from Amazonian/African exporters. Later this properly quarantined livestock is shifted from their farm to their shop for retail sale. However one cannot guarantee that fish is completely free of worms, parasites or bacterias even after treating them.
As Ruchit correctly pointed out PP is the best way to nuke your aquarium & accessories from such infection.
There is separate league of hobbyists who treat aquariums + accessories with soap, shampoo, detergents & scrub it with Scotch-Brite etc.
Very few discus with harder immunity survive the fatal attack like Plague. But from a hobbyist point of view, always safer to start with new batch by discarding Plague survivors. |

How about keeping the tank run with high dose of formalin for 1 week ?
PP stains the glass and equipment if kept for longer period |
