First  of  all,a  big  round  of  applause  for  Manish  for  starting  this  wonderful  thread!  Cheer
Fantastic  write-ups  from  our  fellow  IAHians  too!  Clapping

The  relationship  is  actually  between   the  goal  you  want  to  achieve  in  this  hobby  and  the  money  you  can  afford  to  spend  on  it.
If  you  are  dreaming  of  a  ADA  tank  and  do  not  have  surplus  cash  in  hand, then  DIY,collection  trips  and  waiting  for  give  away  stuff  might  leave  you  wanting  for  more.
On  the  other  hand, somebody  interested  in  natives  and  locally  available  plant  species  will  have  the  time  of  their  lives  while  on  a  collection  trip  without  having  to  spend  a  fortune  on  it.
I  believe  the  mantra  for  this  hobby  (as  a  matter  of  fact  for  any  hobby  in  general)  should  be  knowing  your  limits  and  learn  to  live  with  it.I  learned  about  the  techniques  involved  in  marine  aquarium  from  my  cousin  at  a  time  when  it  was  pretty  rare  to  find  them  in  Kolkata. The  120  gallon  FOWLR  tank  in  his  drawing  room  was  and  still  is  the  ultimate  dream  of  my  life.Today  affording  such  a  tank  might  not  be  beyond  my  reach  but  I  know  where  to  draw  the  line  and  stop  stretching  my  hobby  budget.
The  philosophy  applies  to  my  approach  to  planted  tanks  as  well.Though  not  at  all  a  perfectionist,I  prefer  to  give  my  pets  the  best  that  I  can  afford. So  if  I  ever  venture  in  the  world  of  plants  then  a  complete  ADA  setup  it  will  be.
But  like  the  marine  dream  this  will  have  to  wait--wait  till  the  time  my  hobby  budget  can  cover  it  without  compromising  with  the  other  priorities  in  my  life.

Check  this  out  to  see,  what  one  could  do  with  very  little  money  -  but  with  lots  of  passion  -  specifically  in  this  hobby  !!

MOSCOW  A  Russian  artist  has  created  the  world's  smallest  working  aquarium  which  holds  just  two  teaspoons  of  water.  The  tiny  fish  tank  contains  miniature  plants, multicoloured  stones, and  miniature  zebra  danio  fish.Measuring  just  30  mm  wide  by  24  mm  high  and  14mm  deep, the  glass  tank  can  be  held  in  the  palm  of  your  hand.

Oh  wow!  Ok,  I  removed  it!  Funny  that  people  wouldn't  have  the  sense  to  realise  its  a  temporary  set  up  though..   Innocent

Oh  my  God!   Sad   Not  that  aquarium  again.   Wall Bang   Wall Bang   Wall Bang   Wall Bang
Though  the  reason  behind  posting  it  is  understood  and  relevant  to  this  thread,  please  don't  delve  deeper  into  it.  It  has  been  a  subject  of  flame  wars  on  many  forums  including  IAH  in  the  past.
It  has  been  discussed  many  times  on  IAH.  That  was  an  artist's  model.  Not  a  true  auarium.  Here  are  the  threads  to  some  previous  links.

yea  nisha!  please  kill  the  link.  that  vid  is  gonna  start  another  war.....like  Kastor  said,  its  a  model  aquarium.....the  issue  is  people  dont  realize  that  its  just  a  model.  people  will  want  to  keep  such  small  aquariums  which  will  lead  to  the  death  of  a  lotta  fry  unwantedly.  if  i  saw  someone  posting  a  "aquarium"  like  that  on  the  forum  in  all  possibility  i'll  be  leading  the  charge  to  stop  it!

the  last  thing  we  need  is  people  keeping  this  kinda  aquarium  leading  to  yet  another  unhealthy  demand.  people  will  want  it  and  unscrupulous  fish  sellers  will  sell  the  fry  of  a  fish  that  will  grow  large  as  a  novelty  fish  under  a  fake  name  at  an  over  priced  cost.

i  have  deep  pockets.  but  i  wouldnt  be  caught  dead  investing  in  a  40k  odd  chiller  for  my  tank.   i  would  rather  invest  that  money  on  a  new  sound  system  for  my  car  instead.  i  would  blow  up  40k  for  a  chiller  if   my  tank  was  worth  in  the  millions  but  bottom  line  it  isnt.  its  a  few  grands  tops.  why  would  any  sane  person  blow  up  that  much  money  on  something  thats  not  even  1/4  the  cost  of  the  item  it  self?

Zakk,  I  differ  with  you  on  the  above!

Just  because  3  dozen  cardinals  cost  ~  3-4K  and  the  entire  planted  setup  -  another  6-8K,  does  not  mean  spending  40K  on  a  chiller  does  not  make  sense!
If  you  are  staying  at  a  place  like  Delhi  where  the  temp  shoots  to  45+  and  dips  below  3C,  one  would  need  a  chiller  if  one  wishes  to  keep  cardinals!

I  hear  too  many  Delhites  complaining  of  loosing  such  fish.

Being  in  a  similar  situation  and  having  deep  pockets  if  you  would  switch  to  other  fish  which  would  not  bring  you  as  much  pleasure  then  perhaps  we  belong  to  different  school  of  thoughts...

 Jack

do  you  know  that  you  can  get  a  chiller  for  4k?  Would  you  spend  40k  on  a  1/2  hp  chiller  or  4k  on  a  chiller  that  will  work  on  a  12v  power  source  just  as  well?  I  didnt  want  to  spend  even  that  much  so  i  sourced  the  parts  and  made  it  my  self  of  under  2k.

 what  would  you  do?

Noo!  Didnt  know  chillers  come  for  that  price  tag!
Never  heard  if  it.  Never  seen  one.  Not  even  on  websites!

The  cheapest  I  have  seen  online  cost  30k+  and  that  is  what  made  me  think  you  were  opposed  to  the  idea  of  spending  on  a  chiller.

I  too  most  likely  would  have  made  it  myself  if  it  isnt  a  rocket  science!

PS  :  Now  that  you  mentioned  that  chillers  can  cost  that  less,  you  have  a  PM  from  me.  want  to  get  more  details  Smile

 a  little  offtopic  -

 Viresh,

This  forum  is  for  sharing.  If  you  are  saving  36k,  thats  a  substantial  amount.  Please  do  share  more  information  on  your  setup.  Will  benefit  lot  of  others.

Detailed  information  on  tank  volume  and  what  delta  you  are  able  to  achieve  would  be  very  useful.

 Nice  discussion..
 Adding  my  two  cents  !!

I  think  forums  like  IAH  with  some  really  good  members  has  also  helped  to  bring  down  costs  for  hobbyists.
I  myself  have  got  several  things  for  my  aquarium  for  very  less  cost  or  even  for  free  from  hobbyists  on  this  forum.  After  all  if  you  have  some  stuff  in  surplus  or  not  using  it,  why  not  share  with  fellow  hobbyists?  I'm  trying  to  do  the  same  as  much  as  possible   Very Happy

But  as  far  as  DIY  and  collection  is  concerned,  it  might  be  quite  difficult  for  newbies  because  the  lack  the  expertise  and  also  the  confidence  to  try  out  such  things.  Again  forums  like  this  help  a  lot  in  that  regard.
