i know this question is been asked many times but just need help with lighting. i think it is the most hardest part for me to determine light
building a tank 6x2.5x2 (LxBXh) in ft. planning to grow plants in bright light, with dirt substarte and maybe Co2. I was going through the net and books and my brain cells are just over cooked with too much info. dont know how to filter it. !! how should u determine it ??in Watts per gallon, lumen or par??
tank capacity
850 litres
187 gallon (UK)
224 gallon (us) |

Now that its coocked...why not cook it more. Do this home-work... the LKG style.
1. Are you concerned about Electricity bills?
2. Are you in a tropical climate?
3. Do you have AC at home?
4. How regularly do you want to trim your plants?
Should cut down the options and way you look at your choices.
Cheers! |

I would suggest you go with LED setup.
Although it would be a cracker, but even if you would go with MH[the other sensible option] you would need atleast 950W to be sufficiently lit. And 950W of MH is gonna cost you a bomb to maintain, considering that you can tackle the heat. |

Sai has already asked a few questions that are very pertinent
What plants are you looking at? High light low light?
Are you going to be on CO2?
These need to be answered before you finalize your stuff. At 2 feet height the traditional answers will be T5HO and MH. I don't have any in depth knowledge about LEDs to make a comment. If you are aiming at MH the amount of heat generated will need to be considered. Moreover MH fitting are generally heavy and need to be placed much higher than the other light sources to contain the heat {That will need to be addressed when the tank stand is made/mounted on the ceiling} |

You should have more than enought light to grow anything you want in that tank at 2 WPG of MH light. Go for 3 X 150W Metal halides or if you think the light spread and coverage wont be enought then go for 6 X 75W Metal halides.
The metal halides are only necessary if you want to grow carpet foreground plants as your tank is quite deep and even T5HOs wont be able to produce intense enough light at the substrate level to grow a dense carpet.
If you do not want to grow foreground plants then T5HOs will be good enough. Another option is 3 x 75W Metal halides to cover the front half and foreground of the tank and T5 HOs for the back |

lighting for bright plants in 2.5 feet height?
T5 HO would be good, try to provide min 4-5 watts per gallon for bright pants...
better option would be to go with min 1-2 watts and settle for medium and medium-high lighting plants...
plants grow good with co2, if not algae will grow for this lighting
