finally managed to get some of this beautiful fish...
can give neons a run for their money,IMO..in planted tanks.
these are fairly stressed now, will update later..when they show full colour.
sharing a 20 gal tank native community with other dwarf barbs, danios and loaches at present.planning to set up a 3 ft tank for them soon..
lets see what IAH think of these natives..comments welcome
(in the 2nd pic,there is a p.phutino at the top,collected about a year ago) |

Fantastic choice for a planted tank.
You are right they are currently undernourished and perhaps stressed. Give them week under your care and they will turn into jewels. |

They are cool stuff indeed!
As Vyas pointed out they surely have sunken bellies.
In my observation they go concave-bellies in a matter of few days, probablly during spawns. So regular feeds daily in short intervals helps them.
These are delicate compared to other barbs one would have kept. So let them settle down before you keep moving them into different tanks.
Few I had

thanks.
we caught them yesterday from an area where the pools were drying up and birds were feeding on the stranded fish. maybe the reason for the concave bellies.
starting to take freeze dried worms and also nibbling at tetrabits already.
@saikumar..how many do you have ? do they shoal or just mill around? |

They ll shoal. But sometimes in groups of 4-6 if you have plenty.
If you have a water flow you can view a better shoal. |

IMO they find it difficult to compete for food with faster eaters in a community tank. |

I think they should be. We rarely have lower temperatures in Chennai though. |

This is the habitat we collected them from in Madras. Almost stagnant water. Really heats up in the summer and as Beta said, it doesn't get really cold here in the alleged winters. |

about the temperature, not sure but the air temperature around this time has dropped to around 10-15 deg celcius in the mornings.expected to dip further..
in the last pic, those fishes were swimming just inches from the bank.. |
