Iam talking about a pair of gold gouramis that i bought the other day.
I introduced both pair into a 50litres tank at the same time. After 30hrs i noticed the bubble nest under an almond leaf.Every 15mins or so the male and female come under the nest and the rest is similar to bettas.
So is the female laying her eggs every 15mins.Or should she do it more often? She hides in a small earthen pot while the male guards and repairs the nest. The female is still nice and fat.How long before the spawning is completed?
They are not feeding on the tubifex worms that i have placed inside the tank.

Hi ,
Great to hear that you have a breeding pair.
Just a doubt , How are gouramis sexed ?I saw some lovely gouramis at kolathur btw.
i doubt you should place food during breeding time, because tubifex especially may contain parasites which may not be too good for the eggs or the fry more over uneaten food may start decaying and may still cause problems.adding tubifex may also give the parents a tendancy to eat the fry. |

@aidscontrol; sounds like pre spawning ritual to me. The actual spawning takes a couple of hours... depending on the fish, the pre spawning displays and mock embraces last for cauple of days.
@ravindranak; the Trichogaster/Trichopterus/Colisa gouramies can be easily sexed by looking at the dorsal fin. A male's fin will extend all the way to the tail. Pearl gouramies can be sexed by the long extensions to the male's anal fin. |

Yahoo!!!!!!!!!
I got the fry last nite.Icame back home and found numerous black small gouramis swimming about.
I have removed the female. The male is defending the fry and gulping down large number of fry at a time and returning them to the bubble nest.
The newly hatched are quite big.And i noticed that they can swin against a current generated by the aerator. They remail attached to leaves and the sides of the glass most of the time.
I have tried infusoria.Ihave a bottle with white cloudly water after 50 hrs.
The water seems to be little consistent and doesnot flow easily.
However iam planning to feed them egg yolk and daphnia after 3 days.
What i want to know from you guys.
1.Should i start feeding them after 48 hrs.
2.When do i remove the male.
3.Should i change the water once now.I haven't changed for the past 4 days.
Now back to my observation post.HEHE

1) No ground rule for starting feeding. Watch out for their yolk sacs. Once that get used up, you should stat feeding. (Anywhere from 3 to 6 days.)
2) You can remove the male 1) once you see the fry getting too much out of control for him, swimming everywhere in the tank. 2) After all the fries have oriented horizontally.
3) No need to change the water as yet (if 50 litres). DO REMOVE THE LEFTOVER WORMS! You can start changing wwater after about a week or week and half. Earlier if dosing with egg yolk.
Regards,
amod. |

90% of the fry is dead.
I fed them with egg yolk and daphnia. They never took a bite at it.
I put the aerator on with 20% capacity. My tank is heavily planted.
Anyone know why they all died.

All the un eaten food will cause ammonia spike, Better to feed some brine shrimp or micro worms since they dont pollute the water much. micro worms will stay live in the water for quit some time hence will not cause ammonia. |

sorry for your loss...
but boy, cheer up you have a breeding pair. Prepare yourself well before you chose to mate your fishes again. Gowrami fry's are tooo small that they definitely need Infusoria/green water as their food for atleast 2 days of their free swimming stage.
I do not suggest egg yolk unless you are sure you can do water changes without much hassile. Otherwise, I suggest microworm culture after 2-3 days of free swimming or BBS.
Better luck next time mate... |
