@crazyarchh:  Hmm,  Weekly  changes  in  a  planted  tank?
You  should  do  it  if  you  dose  ferts  and  stuff.  If  you  keep  things  simple,  monthly  changes  are  ok.  Though  weekly  changes  are  still  better,  but  the  plants  wont  face  much  problems.  I  am  guessing  the  OP  wont  be  dosing  so  I  have  suggested  monthly  changes.

 @scapegoat:
Well  the  hood  shouldnt  cost  more  than  the  tank  if  it  isnt  a  complete  lighting  fixture,  with  the  bulbs  included.
And  yes  you  can  start  with  river  sand, but  dont  expect  every  plant  to  grow  in  there.  It  would  be  better  if  you  dont  skip  on  lights  and  substrate  on  the  beginning,  you  can  add  everything  else  later,  but  it  will  be  a  hard  time  changing  the  substrate.

Dude  ,  I'll  just  send  you  a  PM  after  enquiring  about  the  price  of  the  components  .   I  dont  plan  to  maintain  more  than  2  schools  of  10  or  12  fishes  so  as  to  reduce  the  bioload  from  the  excreta  and  thus  minimising  water  changes  ..

 Hiya  Guys   ,
Its  been  quite  some  time  since  i  last  posted  .  Been  kinda  busy  ;)

Thanks  Balaji  @  Shovelnose  .  Like  you  said  i  paid  Mr.Suraj  Kumaar  a  visit  and  he  has  given  his  word  that  he  would  help  me  in  setting  up  a  low  tech  planted  aquarium  .  As  against  my  earlier  proposed  setup  of  a  3  footer  its  going  to  be  a  4  footer  instead  :)

So  here  are  the  basic  components  :
 Tank  (8mm)  :  4'X1.5'X1.5'
Filter  :  Internal  canister  filter  (  didn't  ask  for  the  specs   MY  BAD  !!!  )
 Stand
Airpump  :  I  got  one  already  ,  might  invest  in  a  new  if  there  is  a  necessity
Substrate  :  Plain  ole  gravel  -  Light  Brown  -(  I  guess  its  4-6mm)
Fishes  :  Gonna  be  some  hardy  species  of  tetra  (  A  big  no  to  larger  species  like  black  widow  and  stuff  )
:  A  school  of  male  fancy  guppies/Zebra  danios  ;  sometime  later
 Co2        :  Nope

This  has  took  me  to  the  lowest  5  figure  mark...

That  comes  to  the  end  of  the  post  ..  Oops  ,  did  i  forget  something  ??

Yes  ,  The  HOOD/CANOPY  :  Any  suggestions  ??  It  should  hold  about  4  household  tubelights  .A  flat  design  is  a  must  .

Could  somebody  post  some  relevant  pics  of  such  a  TANK  HOOD  and  the  basic  layout

 Thanks  guys  :)

 Regards

Seems  good  except  for  gravel,  4-6  mm  is  not  good  for  planted  tank.
Get  hold  of  normal  construction  sand,  sieve  it  twice  once  with  larger  dia  sieve,  throw  away  large  particles.
Sieve  the  balance  with  fine  mesh,  like  the  one  used  in  kitchen,  throw  away  the  fine  particles.
You  will  be  left  with  substrate  with  2-4  mm  dia.
Go  in  for  low  light  plants,  anubias,  crypts,  vals,  moss  etc.
For  more  information  on   such  tanks  check  this  link.

A  long  back  I  had  such  tanks  and  they  were  reasonable  success

PostPosted: Wed Dec 21, 2011 10:12 pm Post subject: Re: Help needed; planted aquarium ; QUERIES PG NO.3 Reply with quote

 WHY  ALWAYS  ME  ??

Was  eagerly  awaitin  for  the  tank  to  be  delivered  today  ,  but  due  to  some  mix  up  in  the  LFS  it  is  due  for  saturday  ...   :(

Lemme  forget  about  that  stuff  and  post  some   queries  that  s  been  bugging  me  of  late

 1.  Hood  design  ...  it  is  the  one  that's  holding  me  back  from  procuring  some  plants  for  the  tank  .  First  thing  ,  its  hard  to  sight  a  flat  hood  in  LFSs  overhere  .  I  managed  to  find  a  couple  flat  hoods  in  an  LFS  today  .  The  annoying  thing  is  its  too  pricey  ;  1.5  times  the  cost  of  a  four  footer  tank  ;  that  too  without  lighting  fixtures  ...  Seemed  weird  !!!

I  would  appreciate  your  help/opinions/design  specifications  for  the  canopy/hood  thing

 2.  Can  i  go  with  household  tubelights  for  lighting  ?     What  are  T5  s  and  PLL  s  ?

 3.  What  would  be  the  best  tetras  to  start  with  ?

 My  narrowed  down  choices  :

 1.  One  school  of  Glowlight  tetra  to  start  with   and  cardinals  or  neon  for  the  second  school  sometime  later  (  12  +  12  or  13  +  13  )

 2.  One  school  of  neon  /  cardinal  tetras  and  a  school  of  male  fancy  guppies  (  12  +  12  or  13  +  13  )

 3.  One  school  of  tetras  and  another  school  of  zebra  danios

As  far  as  i  researched  the  glowlights  seem  to  be  very  hardy  ,  whereas  the  cardinals  seem  to  be  very  picky  about  the  water  parameters  but  less  susceptible  to  diseases  than  their  smaller  cousins  ,  the  neon  tetras  .

And  another  criteria  when  selecting  tetras  is  that  i  prefer  the  ones  that  donot  grow  larger  than  1.5  inches  (max  )

Please  post  your  views  and  help  this  poor  soul  Cheer Up

 Regards
 Gautham

Go  for  T5.  They  are  slimmer  than  normal  tube  lights  but  will  produce  more/equal  consuming  less  power.

I  have  changed  all  the  lights  to  T5  at  my  home  after  I  got  into  the  hobby  :)

Its  going  to  be  a  tetra  only  tank  or  peaceful  fishes  that  stay  well  below  the  1.5  inch  mark  ...  STRICTLY  !!!!

Like  you  suggested  I  went  through  the  DIY  section  for  Hoods  -  Shelly's  acrylic  hood  -  It  was  cool  ,  but  not  sure  about   the  cost  factor  ,  so  planning  to  go  for  something  like  this

I  have  the  exact  same  setup  as  the  poster  and  have  PM'd  him  my  expenses.  BTW  on  a  different  note,  why  can't  we  openly  discuss  the  prices  on  this  forum?  What  is  the  reason  discussing  prices  openly  not  encouraged  on  this  forum?  We  are  all  hobbyists  so  I  don't  see  any  reason  why  discussions  on  prices  should  not  be  allowed.  Somebody  please  enlighten  me.

OFF  TOPIC  :  You  got  a  better  rig  than  mine  (  ENVY  Wink  )  ....  Missed  the  HD6870  by  a  whisker  ,  wasn't  brave  enough  to  face  the  PCIE1.x  gen  compatibility  issues  of  AMD  Radeon  cards  and  my  Intel  mobo  ...  MY  BAD  !!!

(  Yup  ,  Nvidia  cards  are  a  bit  pricey   Again  ,  the  HD6870  and  the  GTX460  costs  virtually  the  same  but  the  HD6870  beats  the  GTX460  by  a  fair  margin  .  So  you've  got  yourself  a  good  video  card   Thumb Up  )  OFF  TOPIC  _  HOBBYISTS  PLS  IGNORE  THIS
