This  was  one  large  trip,  Both  in  terms  of  number  of  days  and  the  Size  of  the  fishes  caught.

As  on  any  trips,  this  trip  too  was  filled  with  excitement,  thrill,  danger  and  not  to  mention  Humane  story  of  interest.  Ahhh,  Life!!!!!!

Near  Shimoga,  at  around  2.00pm  on  Day  3  we  came  across  Tunga  river.  A  small  hamlet  where  the  underprivileged  of  the  society  live,  we  were  nevertheless  impressed  with  the  cleanliness  of  the  hamlet.  Sooo  different  from  the  regular  stinky  mess.

Getting  near  the  river,  we  found  a  small  hut  with  thatched  roof  where  lived  a  fisherman  with  his  wife  and  son  about  6-7years  old.  The  Son  tagged  along,  and   as  we   started  unpacking  our  nets  we  heard  a  loud  joyous  scream  from  him.  He  had  caught  a  Rasbora  daniconious  in  a  torn  seine  net  that  he  had  placed  strategically.  That  was  his  lunch,  based  on  sustenance  fishing!  On  asking  him  where  else  he  had  placed  other  nets  and  what  else  he  usually  caught  he  appeared  to  be  ignoring  us.

As  we  proceeded  to  catch  fishes  with  our  hand  nets,  he  followed  us  and  started  gesturing  to  places  where  he  saw  fishes.  So  we  handed  him  one  of  the  hand  nets,  and  soon  he  was  busy  jumping  from  rock  to  rock,  as  agile  as  an  athlete  and  attempting  to  catch  fishes.  After  about  an  hour  as  we  started  packing  our  nets  and  catch,  he  came  back  and  handed  the  net  back  to  us.  We  told  him  to  keep  the  hand  net,  and  were  answered  by  a  blank  stare.  At  that  point  his  mother  came  along  to  take  him  back  for  lunch.  We  asked  her  why  the  kid  was  not  understanding  us  or  talking  to  us,  and  her  reply  was.......HE  WAS  DEAF  AND  MUTE!

Jump  forward  by  another  hour,  and  we  were  fishing  downstream  of  Shimoga.  We  repeatedly  came  across  large  quantity  of  dead  fishes,  with  no  apparent  injury  on  the  body.  This  perplexed  us.  Just  then  a  couple  of  fishermen  came  by  and  on  asking  them  about  this  phenomenon  we  were  told  that  a  large  gang  of  Goons  had  come  from  Shimoga  and  dynamited  the  river  earlier.  The  size  of  their  catch  was  approx  1  quintal  or  100Kgs!   And  in  the  process  they  might  have  indiscriminately  slaughtered  three  times  the  amount  of  fishes  which  they  had  been  unable  to  collect  and  were  floating  around  and  into  our  nets.

In  the  first  case  sustenance  or  livelihood,  in  the  second  plain  simple  greed!  Sick

 Regards,

The  picture  of  that  brave  Kid!  With  a  Garra  bicornuta  in  his  hand.

So  on  a  Tuesday  got  up  at  3.30am.  Picked  Preetham  and  reached  the  cantonment  Railway  station  at  4.30am.  Rahul  and  Jhon  had  already  reached  Bangalore  from  Trivandrum.  Reached  Tiptur  at  6.30am  for  a  heavy  breakfast  of  Chow  Chow  bath  and  thatte  Idly  at  Pai  restaurant.  Did  I  mention  that  the  said  Restaurant  belongs  to  my  Lecturer  from  SIT,  Tumkur?  Very Happy

Reached  the  first  water  body  after  Chikmagalur.  A  artificial  pond  having  a  residential  school  built  on  the  catchment  area?????

A  Coracle  full  of  fishermen  reeling  in  their  catch.  They  have  seeded  it  with  Tilapia.  We  were  presented  a  Mystus  Sp.  which  had  somehow  managed  to  survive  in  this  invaded  lake.

Crabs.  Most  probably  caught  and  used  as  baits.  Financially  not  viable  to  transport  them  for  sale  to  discerning  Gourmands,  I  think.

The  next  water  body  was  1  hour  away.  At  10.33am,  well  in  the  Western  Ghats.

 The  catch,  Nemacheilus  anguilla.

Further  upstream.  Almost  all  the  water  bodies  had  been  check  dammed,  and  with  a  associated  water  pump.  Highly  illegal!!!!

 Schistura  semiarmatus.

 Regards,

 Hmmm  interesting.
 Some  queries
 1)  If  the  area  has  been  check  dammed  then  the  waters  would  be  atleast  7-8  feet  deep.  How  could  you  catch  fishes  there?
 2)  How  do  you  catch  fishes  in  artificial  ponds  or  lakes  where  you  cannot  wade  into  the  water,  since  its  deep?

Nayak  Oh  I  miss  those  lovely  3  day  trip  with  my  fellow  driver  who  nearly  drove  me  to  death,  and  TREVOR  who  instead  of  helping  me  out  of  the  Car  was  busy  clicking  away.  Later  on  when  questioned  by  me  of  the  sanity  of  his  clicking,  he  answered  I  am  going  to  post  them  alongwith  with  title  "thats  what  happens  when  you  don't  drive  safe"  Chuckle  Good  to  see  you  all  in  such  a  long  trip.  Thumb Up

 1)  These  are  not  concrete  check  dams.  But  made  using  rocks,  woods  and  what  not,  for  easy  dismantling  in  case  the  forest  officer  comes  calling.  The  only  danger  is  where  the  inlet  pipe  of  the  water  pump  is.  They  would  have  dug  up  there  to  increase  the  depth.  Else  at  most  point  it  was  not  more  than  3  feet  deep.  But  anyways,  we  had  Rahul's  cast  net.
 2)  Take  help  from  the  local  fishermen.  Finally  it's  your  PR  Smile

Suneal,  come  to  Bangalore  in  April.  Madan  would  be  back  and  lets  do  three  days  trip,  like  old  times  Very Happy

 To  continue,

The  next  water  body,  6KMs  before  Balehonnur...

It  was  pretty  hot.  By  12.30pm  we  had  managed  to  consume  4  litres  of  bottled  water.  This  is  the  Bhadra  river.

Plenty  of  Eriocaulons  around  along  with  hair  grass.  The  river  was  drying  up,  being  Summer.  Emmersed  growth.  Check  the  substrate?

 Collected  some.

Check  John  concentrating  on  counting  the  scales.  What  might  be  of  such  interest  to  him?

You  guessed  right.  Hypselobarbus  sp.  Most  probaly  Hypselobarbus  dobsoni.

So  finally  after  the  previous  trip  where  we  could  not  find  head  or  tail  of  any  Hypselobarbus  here  was  success!!!!!  Remember  John  is  doing  his  postgraduate  in  Hypselobarbus  genus.  We  also  caught  a  lot  of  Tor  Sp.,  Aplocheilus  blockii,  Aplocheilus  lineatus  and....not  to  mention.....  a  lot  of  insects.

Here  is  one,  curious  as  to  what  we  were  up  to.  Water  Scorpion.

 Regards,

 Joyban,  sorry  for  the  delay.

 Here  goes......

Rahul  kept  on  casting  with  his  cast  net.

By  then  it  was  1.30pm  and  our  stomach  was  chaffing  against  our  back  bone.  So  went  off  to  this  hotel  in  Balehonnur  for  a  scrumptious  lunch.

Madhu  having  his  Biryani.  Madhu?????  Here??????   Oops  This  was  an  earlier  pic  from  a  earlier  trip  from  the  same  hotel  in  Feb-2009.

Back  to  fish  collection.  The  next  Habitat.

The  habitat  had  some  interesting  rock  formations.

Feeling  drowsy  after  a  heavy  meal,  decided  to  try  my  fabled  artistic  talent.  A  million  and  three  Suns  shining  Very Happy

 Some  more  native  aquatic  plants.

The  Fishchasers©  busy  packing.  The  covers  were  kept  back  in  the  river  to  maintain  temperature.

 To  be  continued.....

 Tor  Sp.

 Nemacheilus  shimogensis

 Balitora  Sp.

 Nemacheilus  shimogensis  in  the  wild.

 And  a  few  of,
 Balitora  mysorensis
 Barillius  bendelisis
 Barillius  gatensis
 Bhavania  australis
 Botia  striata
 Devario  aequipinnatus
 Hypselobarbus  curmuca
 Hypselobarbus  dobsonii
 Nemacheilus  anguilla
 Nemachilichthys  shimogensis
 Psilorhyncus  tenura
 Salmostoma  boopis
 Salmostoma  acinaces
 Tor  khudree
 Tor  sp.

A  cherubic  Preetham  with  the  catch,

By  now  it  was  getting  dark  and  the  birds  were  headed  to  their  nesting,

But  the  Fishchasers©  were  not  done  yet.  Rahul  had  exchanged  his  casting  net  for  a  hand  net.

Finally  reached  our  nesting  place  in  Balehonnur  at  9.30pm.  John  had  still  not  finished  with  his  Ichthyology.  Counting  rays!

 End  of  day  one.

 Day-2

 Balehonnur-Koppa-Tirthahalli.

Ghosts?  No,  The  Fishchasers©  at  5.00am.

The  early  Fishchaser©  gets  the  driftwood!

6.00am.  It's  getting  brighter.  But  mist  reducing  visibility.

Mist  generated  by  the  cooler  wind  on  the  warmer  water.

 7.00am.  Mist  clears  finally.

 Fishchasers©  checking  the  habitat.

 The  rapids.

A  Balitora  Sp.  in  the  rapids.

Extremely  deep  on  the  other  side.  Very  hazardous  in  reduced  visibility.

A  dense  carpet  of  Cryptocoryne  Sp.  Most  probably  spiralis.

Nemacheilus  shimogensis  in  the  wild  again.  N.anguilla  and  Botia  striata  were  found  here  too.

A  slow  speed  capture  of  the  rapid.

A  high  speed  capture.  Had  to  use  flash  in  this  setting.

Fishchasers©  enticing  the  Loaches  into  the  net  using  Parle-G  biscuits  as  bait.

The  caught  Nemacheilus  shimogensis.  The  largest  one's  were  left  back.

 To  be  continued.....
