|
|
Hi,
This is my first planted tank... I started in August.
Just 15 days back It was all fine ... then it got all cloudy with a greenish effect,
The water is ABSOLUTELY clean.... in the sense... have changed it regularly...
The fishes are basic guppies (8-10)
Tank size lxbxh 40x16x24 inches
N0 fertilizers ... basic DIY CO2 since August 2011.
Lighting Approx 2 watts per gallon (I have basic plants and they have grown well in this relatively low lighting)
I even tired blacking out the tank for 2 days .. nothing happenend.
SOMEONE PLEASE SUGGEST A WAY OUT.

Does sunlight is falling into the tank?
An UV filter can help in clearing the green water. |

Hi Shelly,
Thanks..
yes I forgot to mention,,, the tank is on my window.. with LATE AFTERNOON sunlight abount 3pm or so.
But then .. why did it not get cloudy all these months?
For UV protection... anything to block out the SUN light?? cardboard / chartpaper sheets will do??
Will try the above and revert. |

Yes a UV filter can clear Green water and do use a Thermocol or cardboard to block direct sunlight getting in to the tank as this will induce algae growth. |

+1 A UV filter will help in your case. Anyways don't forget regular water changes in your tank. |

| I faced the same problem while using diy co2.Your tank is suffering from algae bloom.Frequent water changes might help. |

Thanks people...
Have currently covered the back glass to prevent sunlight.
However for the sake of the plants .. the tank lights are ON.
Will revert once the "undesired greenery" dissappears.
cheers |

Water changes will not help in Green water algae bloom. More often than not it brings new nutrients for algae to feed on.
Perform a 4 day total black out on your tank, do not open it even for feeding.
Do a large water change after 4 days 60-70%, it should solve the problem.
You might have disturbed substrate and ammonia, nitrates might have come into water column.
This amount of sunlight should not cause problems.
My planted tanks used to have sunlight falling for about 4-5 hrs, there was no problem. |
