Hi All,
I have got this pair of copper Oscar (around 8 inches) in a 42, 15, 18 tank. Since yesterday i find them very aggressive and doing this lip locking activity. The tank is occupied just by them and has an EHEIM external filter. Is this a concern and do I need to do anything.
Thanks for your help and have a good weekend.
Regards, |

Hi subhrajit,
They will definitely do bullying unless they are paired. Your tank size is good for only one oscar. If you want to keep a pair of oscar, try to keep 6-7 juvenile oscars and wait for 6-7 months to grow; find the pair; return remaining oscars to the LFS; finally upgrade your tank if possible.
or
Add several numbers of dithering fishes such as Tinfoils, Silver dollars |

Thanks Karthik,
Got them almost an year back and they have grown from 3-4 inches to 8 inches now. So was wondering what’s making them aggressive now. Upgrade of tank not feasible now. Didn’t introduce any dithering fishes, thinking it will consume space and also maybe attacked by the Oscars. But can defiantly give it a shot. So you think the lip locking could be a concern.

subhrajit,
Oscars do that lip locking (bullying) for the territorial issue. It is usual at this size. You can wait for few days whether the bullying stops. Otherwise try adding mid sized dithering fishes 2-3 in numbers. Tinfoils,Silver dollars will never be reached by the oscars. They are lighting fast and constantly swims all the directions in the tank, gathering attention of oscars. They will not have time to lip lock anymore. I recommend Tinfoils since i had kept them with my Red Tiger Oscar for years. |

| subhrajit.. hi.. liplocks could be signs of territorial aggression or breeding behaviour.. do they keep flaring their gill flaps at each other by any chance? just throw in a flat piece of smooth rock into the tank.. prob away from the inlet and outlet of the canister.. prob plonk it right in the center.. prob some pictures or video of your setup and the behaviour would be appreciated.. cheers |

Hi All,
The aggresive lip lock has lead to huge damage for both the fishes. The mouth is badly bruised and this morning i saw some fungal growth in that area (some cotton like stuff). I guess thats mouth rot and really worried abt them. Gave some Ocean free general aid, some rock salt and planing for a 50% water change this eve. Anything else that i need to do. Please suggest.

| Separate one of them and keep it in a quarantine tank, re-introduce them after a week. This may help. I think. Keep 50% water change daily until the signs disappear. |
