This is my diy filter for flowerhorn tank.i have 2 layers of filter sponge and half KG of ceramic rings. The powerhead is rated as 1500lts/hr but i think can pump around 800lts/hr of water, is there any thing else that i can add to this box filter.

Shashank
More number of photos close-up would get you more comments and suggestions if any!
Label the inlet, outlet, media, motor etc...if possible.... |

very neat design
Here are my comments ( for further improvement only if you like)
1. your sponge should stay submerged which will helpful for bacteria colony, in your current design, in case of a power failure, the sponge will dry up soon.
2. for better biological filter, you can keep more than two filter media ( ex bio balls, gravel, carbon, etc )
Good luck |

better optionn would be... let the water from the pump go inside the container at the bottom and let the water pass thru the ceramic rings and the filterpads and then let the over flow from the container back to the tank. Adding a non return valve at the input of the container wont drain the water from the container in the event of power failure. |

i dont need a non return valve if i keep the input pipe at top and even now the water is sprayed through the filter pad and ceramic rings evenly |

Nice and simple design. Down Draft with a spray bar. Easy to clean also. IMO let the sponge remain on top of ceramic rings. May be in future you may need to have larger holes on the spray bar. |

Looks like you are getting good filtration. However much better design would be to switch the inlet and outlets of the filter dabba.
Water come in the bottom.. rises up through the media and the overflow valve bank into tank.
This way the water is more stagnant in the container and bacteria will grow much better
That being said - your water condition looks pretty good. However I dont see the filter discoloring - so dont think its working? |
