am thinking of harvesting rain water and using it to siphon my tanks. i hv done it before as well but now i want to do it on a little larger scale, say on daily basis abt 25% WC for all tanks, that would be approx 60ltrs......has anybody done it before?
comments and past experiences are most welcome..

| Here is a suggestion.. If you are staying in city limit with pollution in air don't even try it. It will kill your plants and fishes. If you stay in a cleaner environment then you can off course do it but its still good to keep the water settle down for a couple of days as rain water will anyways have some environment pollutions. |

Why do you need rain water . Mumbai municipal water is great itself.
Still if you want to store them go ahead. |

deepakg municipal water has various additives. rain water is supposed to be the purest form of water but in cities like mumbai u cant say so.
am using municipal water rite now but was curious to try something different
also will it be good for betta fry??

Omkar please go ahead with it. But only after the rains have set in fully. After 3-4 days of heavy rains the atmosphere is more clean.
I have done it before |

| Omkar, harvesting the rain water is a good thing.. but the rain water has more pollution than the municipal water, every municipal treats the water before it is supplied and most of us don't have problem with this when doing partial water changes, when doing full water changes we need only to store the required quantity for 2 days.. |

@ramdas - thanks for the inspiration. will do it only when it has rained heavily for a few days.....
@nidhi - as ramdas said, rain water will not be polluted once it has rained for a few days.
i also have a tub and a very small pond which are open to sky....so if the fish n plants in it dont suffer why shld the tank fishes n plants suffer....this is another reason why i want to use rain water

+1 Nidhi. Omkar since you stay in polluted city such as Mumbai it is better to avoid rain water especially June rains which would be more toxic than BMC waters. there are loads of cases where fishes of culture ponds die in initial showers due to acidic water.
Acidic water was one of the reason which BMC had given for last years pathetic roads in monsoon, though BMC is covering up corruption and other things but it is true that rains are getting more and more acidic due to global warming. |

What will you do when rains stop, it does not rain in Mumbai for all 12 months.
As soon as you stop using rain water and start using tap water, there will be a drastic change in water parameters and fish will suffer.
A stable water source is more suitable than a pure but uncertain water source. |
