Hi Guys,
One of my friends needs to transport a 150 gallon glass aquarium with stand and hood (4.5x2x2) from Mumbai to Mangalore (about 1000 kms). I suggested that he just take everything else except the glass aquarium, but since it was his first tank he built himself, He's sentimental about it and wants to lug it to mangalore.
Any ideas how this can be done? Professional movers will charge the sky for this and he does not have that kind of money to throw around.
Practical Suggestions are welcome.
Regards,

Hi,
Tell your friend to be practical & buy or make a tank in Mangalore itself. There are many LFS in Mangalore. Transportikng it by road woiuld be a pain (with the advent of Monsoons).

I keep relocating often - within the city and find transporting my 28G a mammoth task. not to mention how taxing it is!
a 150G over 1000 km?man!!
Is he shifting there? I mean is there is truck leaving from Mumbai to Mangalore?
If so, he may want to cushion the tank on all size by thick thermocol sheets and have it sent onto a table or something?
That is how I have been managing so far!
OR if he is so into the idea, try out railways..they may agree to transport it. Worst case it may break/crack...that may be a risk he might take considering the only other option would be to leave it behind!! |

I am also of the opinion of getting a new one made in mangalore. The other option I gave him was having it sent by Bullock Cart
However it would be interesting to find out if there are any practical solutions to this problem. :drinking:

My experience in moving my three feeter was good. I used professional movers (moving my entire house) for HYD to bangalore. I took a chance. To my surprise they packaged it so well (Wooden box was made to fit it) and was using it for long time in Bangalore.
So it all depends of how much you want to pay for being sentimental |

I have moved big tanks, no issues.
But they need to be opened out and siliconed again once they are moved.
I have done this with a 48x27x21" inch tank and had no problem.
That was the biggest, and this was along with 4-5 other smaller tanks.
Use a blade and separate the glass pieces, and once at the location,
redo the whole thing, |

I agree with Nanu,
That the best cost effective way to carry the sentimental tanks.

There is another way too,
but I have only sent a tank once this way and that to from Pune to Mumbai.
I had extra mattress the older softer kinds which I had to sent to
my sister as well as the tank, so I wrapped the tank on all sides with it, yes with mattress,
even the bottom, placed it on a wood plank and tied it all.
It reached fine in one of those Tata magic or whatever,
the tank had no issues, and it was up and running the same way in Mumbai within 24 hours.
Along with the tank went the stand, the filters, Fine white sand
Tonnes of driftwood, and plants all was planned and few cousins to help,
It was a nice weekend.
