Hi friends
Need some technical help with Led flood lamps.
How efficient are LED flood lamps(FL) as compared to Fluorescent lamps?
I am planning to use 10Wx3 LED flood lamps to replace 36Wx2PLLs,as led consumes less power,(and i thought they produce less heat!i was wrong ).
The LED FL becomes too hot after working for hours together.Even though it has its own heat sink,it becomes hot to touch.
If i am not wrong at high temperatures resistance increases, Now the question is wont this force the setup to consume more current, decreasing efficiency?
Are cooling fans necessary to cool down the heat sink in a LED FL?

My suggestion would be go for 2 nos of 30 watt rather than 3 x 10 watt & always but indian fittings. currently i am using 1x 30 watt fld lght for 4 ft tank & seems to be enough as plants r growing well without co2 injct & algae growth. As per my exp fld light choke gets hot little bit but not so much tht u cant touch. no fan n all required u can mount it on back wall of tank & keep it open without hood. I have done d same & this way u can also look in to in your tank from top.

Hey,
As Yadnesh said, you don't need additional cooling for the flood light type LED lamps. The built in heat sink is enough.
I am using one as my garage light and even after being turned on all night, the heat sink only gets moderately warm. Not too hot to touch.
If your aquarium canopy (or DIY light stand) could accommodate it, then 3*10W would give you three levels of light control (low = 1, medium = 1+1, high = 1+1+1) and might be even cheaper than 1*30W light. Where I live, 10W is 5xx and 20W is more than 1xxx bucks.
Also, depending on what height you want to place the lamp, 3 lights would have better spread (that was the case with my 15g 2 feet aquarium).
Finally, I don't think the temperatures at which these LEDs operate (especially with heat-sinks) would be that detrimental to the operating efficiency. While it is true that conductivity decreases with temperature under normal operating temperatures, this shouldn't have too much of an effect.

I have been using led floods on marine and planted with great success. & YES you do need to kool the lights using fans on the light. the reason is that they will last much more, as they do generate heat on the body... i use pride brand and not chineese as they come with 1 year warantee and my cousin is a dealer here in mumbai. the blues are chineese.

Thank you nanomania....This is what i was looking for,
i have fixed the cooling fan,it does cool the unit, the lamp remains cool...only annoying thing is the low noise made by the fans,
