Hi..i just upgraded my aquarium to about 40 gallons. I already had 6 angelfish , 5 zebra fishes, 1 mellon barb. I transfered them to the new one.
they did fine for a day, but when i introduce 4 small scatfishes..by next day my mellon barb and 2 scats dies..after that 3rd scat ided and 4th doesnt look promising.
i would like to mention that i have kept 3 clay pots in the tank..i had scrubbed them clean and kept in the water for 3 days till it wasnt spoiling the water.
i have not put any salt in the water as some people suggest. any help would be appreciated.!!
Thank you. |

Scatophagus argus or commonly known as scat's aren't "Freshwater fish" they are actually "Brackish Water Fish" Although juveniles are often sold in freshwater,
Wild adults live almost entirely in the sea.
Scats are highly sensitive to nitrite and should only be added to well established mature tanks.
Although wild scats are mainly herbivores in a captive environment they will eat anything including smaller fish so tank mates must be over 3 inches.
The tanks temperature should be maintained between 20c and 28c.
Hope this helps...

+1 Darius.
You cannot mix Scat with other fishes mentioned. As the posters above mentioned Scat is brackish water fish.. means need some amount of salt in water to be healthy.
If you add salt to your tank then you cannot keep other fishes you have mentioned.
Hope this helps. |

Buddy
1. Its always safe to quarantine the new fishes before adding them to existing healthy fishes.
2. Although Scats are pretty hardy fishes its always better to provide them with Brackish parameters.
3. All Scats are wild caught so pick your fish carefully from the LFS follow the basic guidelines for picking the fish from LFS and you will do fine.
4. Provide plenty of Aeration and the scats will do fine once acclimated they are very hardy fish..
i had once grown them from 10ps coin size to about 4in coin size.
all they best on your next lot :)
Regards,
Jithin |

| Quarantine every new lfs fish first before introducing them in your tank. And like swapnil said ... They are brackish.. So read before you buy. Its no point buying fancy fish without knowing them. |

hey..thank you all for your suggestions. can you please elaborate on brackish water?
and I did cycle the tank. I use a different method, I used some part of the old tank water and i used the old sponge filter too for sometime.
Generaly this has worked perfectly when i clean out the complete tank and have never faced this problem.
I have seen adult scats living with tetras and monoangels without any problems..hence assumed they would do well in my tank too.
What kind of fishes prefer the same kind of water as Scats? |

Although Scat are brackish water fish, the young can live in fresh water.
They live in area where rivers meet sea, hence they live in water which has salinity between seawater and freshwater.
However mixing angels and scat might not be a good idea.
I use a large 25 lit bucket for quaratine process, if i don't have a spare tank.
Fill it with tank water, put in a sponge filter, let it run for some time and your quaratine tank is ready.
I keep fish in such setups for 2-3 days, although a 7 day period is recommended. |

My sole surviving scat has made it a week in the tank..also chasing the angels which are about 3 times her size.
Is it safe to assume that the scat has adjusted ?
or do i need to separate it out still? |
