Hi all,
Whats the minimum height of the water column needed by shrimp?
Can I keep Red Cherry Shrimps in a tank with the water column being only 12"L x 12"W x 8"H?
If so, how many?
Am planning on a Paludarium like setup, hence asking... |

| Shrimps can be kept in shallow water as long as the water quality is maintained. You should be able to keep 2 dozen of them easily. I assume there will not be any other fish in this. |

If I can increase the water level, I was thinking of some Tetras as well.
But I doubt that now...
Know anyone who's done a Shrimp Paludarium on IAH? |

| lesser water level means more heat (if high light is used) on shrimps.. make sure you are taking enough care on water temperature. |

Well, right now it's just an empty tank with a lighting fixture lying inside...
:P
Getting some plants to grow emersed right now.
Will start once I find good rocks, etc. for the hardscape...
Will have a detailed journal when I do start... |

Shrimps tend to jump if water level is low.
If water height is more, still the shrimps want to climb the tallest plants and graze on the algae on the leaves and enjoy some time in a day near the surface
If fishes disturb these shrimps, they usually take a big leap and may jump out of the palladium if you are planning to use them.
My 2 cents |

@paganwinter
Hi Vaidu,
Your tank is perfectly OK for RCS.
Red Cherry Shrimps are breeding in my 12" diameter bowl.
Remove all other fishes (as they may eat RCS fries)
Add lot of Java moss (or any other moss)...
Also add some rocks/driftwood pieces as hiding place.
You will see them start breeding in 1 or 2 months.. :-)
I have around 30 to 40 of them in my bowl, which is smaller than your tank.
Limiting them to 10 to 15 number will be good for them.
Regards
Sujo |

Will keep in mind.
Still some time before I fill my tank.
All depends on what kind of rocks I get... |
