 Hi  Friends,

 I  am  planning  to  set  up  a  small  semi-planted  tank  (size  -  16  x  12  x  12).  Tank  volume  comes  to  ~9.6  gallons.

Plants  would  include  anubias  bateri,  anubias  nana  and  java  fern.  I  would  be  using  sand  as  the  substrate  since  I  am  not  planning  to  make  this  a  fully  planted  one.  Fauna  will  be  6-8  tetra  and  1  otto  as  the  cleaning  mate.  I  also  am  not  planning  for  any  CO2  in  the  initial  phase  (will  see  if  needed  later).

I  needed  suggestions  regarding  the  lighting  equipment:
 1.  I  am  planning  a  10  watt  hitachi  tube  for  this  tank  since  the  plants  are  low-light  ones.  Will  10  watts  suffice  for  the  plants?
 2.  What  should  be  the  photo-period  per  day  as  per  this  10W  lighting?
 3.  Which  timer  (for  lighting)  should  i  go  for  (since  I  am  living  alone  and  working.  Managing  the  lights  schedule  will  be  an  issue)?
 4.  Do  you  recommend  any  fertilizers  (keeping  in  mind  the  tank  size,  lighting  of  10W  and  plant  types)?  If  yes,  please  suggest  some  names.

 Thanks  for  your  help.

 Regards

Lights  will  be  okay,  15  watts  will  be  better.
In  small  tanks  w/g  rule  does  not  hold.
A  monthly  fertilization  will   be  enough  as  the  growth  will  be  slow.
Aim  for  30-40%  wc  every  15  days.
Lighting  period  should  be  as  same  as  for  normal  planted  tanks,  10-12  hrs.

What  would  be  a  good/ideal  substrate  for  an  Anubias  and  ferns  tank  like  this.
Consider  around  70%  of  plants  on  driftwood/rock  and  30%  on  substrate.

 Option  1)  Ada  Amazonia
 Option  2)  Aqua  Clay
 Option  3)  Golden  sand/White  Sand
 Option  4)  Something  else...

I  am  also  thinking  about  a  similar  tank  and  that  is  why  I  am  asking  this  question.
 Please  leave  your  comments.

Substrate  doesn't  really  matter  for  anubias. What  plants  are  you  gonna  plant  in  the  substrate?

dont  keep  anubia  barteri  in  10  gallon  tank.  It  will  be  very  big.  It  looks  big  even  in  my  20  gallon.
About  substrate  if  fern  and  anubia  is  the  only  thing  keep  anything  .......  dont  waste  money  on  ada  and  all.
I  have  a  10  liter  tank  where  i  have  kept  anubia  nanapetite, round  leaf  and  marsila  hirsuta  the  substrate  has  20  %  of  controsoil  and  they  are  doing  good.  The  only  reason  of  thaty  20%  is  marsila.

Lighting  ::  keep  the  tank  where  there  is  indirect  sunlight.my  tank(10  liter  one)  had  no  lights  for  a  month  and  the  only  problem  was  the  growth  became  further  slow......Anyways  keep  the  15  watt  light  for  maximum  5  hrs  that  is  enough  for  anubias(i  can't  be  confident  on  ferns  since  i  dont  have  a  personal  experiance)

@  Sandeep  -  Thanks  for  the  suggestions.

Would  a  normal  CFL  of  15  watts  work  for  this  or  should  i  look  for  a  specific  kind  of  bulb/tube.  (I  know  Hitachi  has  a  15  watt  tube  but  it  would  not  fit  on  my  tank  due  to  its  length).

Can  you  please  elaborate  on  what  kind  of  fertilisers  should  be  used?  I  suppose  liquid  ones?  Can  you  all  recommend  me  some  names  of  good  fertilisers  that  you  might  have  used  for  anubias  and  ferns?

Which  timer  (brand  name)  should  i  go  for?

 Thanks  Jabba.

Yes,  I  will  be  keeping  only  anubias  and  ferns  so  I  am  not  planning  for  any  nutrient  substrate  like  ADA  or  contro.

Regarding  the  lighting,  what  kind  of  tube  or  bulb  should  i  go  for,  for  15  watts?  Also,  do  you  use  any  fertilisers  for  your  anubias  tank?

Would  be  great  to  have  suggestions  from  other  experts  on  the  requirements  for  Java  ferns.

Use  the  any  good  brand  of  14  watt  CFL  this  is  the  best  and  cheapest  solution.  All  those  fancy  tube  lights  you  get  are  of  no  use.  The  CFL  will  be  easy  and  cheaper  to  replace  in  the  long  term.

Which  timer  (brand  name)  should  i  go  for?

A  normal  15  w  cfl  will  serve  the  purpose,  make  sure  it  is  6500k.
Anubias  and  fern  are  both  slow  growers,  I  have  always  used  liquid  fertilizers,  mostly  directly  mixed  from  chemicals.
However  Seachem  has  a  product  called  Flourish,  it  contains  macors  and  micros  also(check  on  net  to  be  sure  of  the  exact  name),  there  might  be  others  also  but  as  I  have  not  used  them,  I  cannot  comment,
A  timer  is  always  a  very  handy,  but  if  you  can  switch  the  lights  on  every  morning  and  switch  them  off  at  night,  you  might  not  need  it.  It  depends  upon  yout  schedule.

I  checked  on  the  Seachem  site.  Seachem  Flourish  is  the  product  listed.  Sharing  the  link  for  the  same:  http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/Flourish.html

"Flourishâ„¢  is  a  comprehensive  plant  supplement  for  the  natural  freshwater  aquarium.  It  contains  a  rich  assortment  of  important  micro  elements,  trace  elements  and  other  nutrients."

Is  this  the  correct  product?  Also  does  anyone  know  where  is  it  available  in  Mumbai?
