Dont  waste  your  money  in  buying  the  test  kits...  My  sincere  advise.  Its  really  not  required  for  a  freshwater  tank.  If  it  was  a  marine  tank,  I  would  have  asked  you  to  buy.  But  for  a  freshwater,  its  a  real  waste  to  buy  the  test  kits.

you  DON'T  need  a  test  kit.  Just  get  on  google  and  start  doing  some  serious  reading  up  on  the  basics  of  freshwater  aquariums.

If  it  is  planted  tank,  you  can  go  for  a  nitrate  kit.
 You  don't  need  any  other.
If  it  is  a  non  planted,  you  dont  really  need  anything.

Nitrates  are  a  major  nutrient  for  plants.
Most  of  us  follow  EI  dosing,  along  with  weekly  water  changes  we  try  to  dose  for  adequate  levels  of  nutrients.
However  whether  you  are  dosing  enough  for  your  tank  is  never  easy  to  determine.
The  levels  required  to  be  maintined  are  between  5  pmm  to  30  ppm.
That  is  a  big  range  to  maintain.
I  was  dosing  about  20  ppm  on  a  weekly  basis,  but  when  I  got  my  test  kit,  I  tested  hardly  any  nitrate  in  aquarium.
The  test  kit  was  okay  because  when  I  tested  my  nitrate  stock  solution  the  results  were  correct.
In  a  reply  to  one  of  my  queries,  Tom  Brarr  commented  for  my  tank  that  nitrate  consumption  for  my  tank  would  be  about  3-4  ppm  per  day.
It  is  then  that  I  realised  that  I  was  underdosing  nitrates.
Now  I  have  increased  to  30  ppm  for  last  10  days,  the  plants  seem  to  be  responding  well.
Test  kits  though  not  essential  but  are  a  good  tool  to  have,  they  take  out  guess  work  and  help  you  in  diagonsing  problems.
