Last few days looks like there has been an outburst of hair algae in my shrimp tank. Both black and green hair algae.
What should i do?
Will ADA Phyton-git help? if yes what dose? |

You could take out all you fish and shrimp and add 20ml per 10 us gallon of 3% hydrogen peroxide.
Remove any filteration equipment you may have.
Leave it in for 10 to 20 minutes and do two 50% water changes back to back.
In a day the color of bba will tun from black to reddish brown. The second day, it will turn white and start withering away.
ENSURE that you do not have any shrimp/small fish in the tank when treating with H2O2. It will definitely kill all your shrimp and small fishes like tetra. Your plants like vals/crypts (any soft feaved plants) will also suffer so does your nitrifying bacteria in your filter.
H2O2 definitely will work but you are playing with fire and stress your fish if not done correctly. |

You can also remove as much hair algae as you can by pulling it out using forceps. and once you have enough out ... introduce yamatos ... they should take care of the rest ...
do a lot of WCs and reduce light by 60% for 3 days ... perhaps increase dosage of CO2 ...
This should bring it down a lot!
Cheers

Thanks akumar and Darius.
Its impossible to take out shrimps and fishes from my aquarium as its heavily planted and lot of woods
So went with the ADA way.. Want to share this so that people can use if they are not able to move their fishes.
First removed 60% water.. brushed and trimmed hair algae as much possible.
Then filled water. Its a 120L tank.. gave 120drops of Phyton-git and switched off light for 3 days. Total dark.. only used to light the room light(not aquarium) during feeding the fishes. 3rd day did a 60% water change. The water has turned slightly dark yellowish brown mix. probably dead algaes. I don't see a 100% algae killed.. but a reasonable decrease in the amount. During change i have removed some more algaes manually.. lets see..
@Darius: yamatos will be great addition. Still searching in my nearby LFS. |

@cyclopse99,
If you cant find yamatos, try with siamese algae eater or smaller variety of black mollies and reduce the lighting period ( or switch off for 3 days).

I am also having the same issue, What I am doing is, trimmed the most effected plants and introduced some mollies , I can see the moment I introduced the mollies , they started eating the hair algae. planing to switch off light for next 3 days . Its now on room light only. Let see what result will get .
I will follow this thread for any suggestions too . |

this is the best way to deal with algae removing the heavely infested parts(if its possible) and introducing some algae eating fish. you'll also need to investigate as to what actually went wrong that lead to this infestation and correct it. increasing Co2 or addition of florishexcel/ glut along with increased circulation of water will also be helpful. |
