Hi,
I was thinking of keeping a couple of shrimps in my 10G planted community tank.
One of the reason for keeping shrimps is because a friend told me that they eat dead plant leaves. Following are the questions I have:
1. Which would be a better choice in that case( eating decaying leaves) red cherry shrimps or crystal red shrimps?
2. Which one would be easily available in Mumbai or Navi Mumbai?
3. The top filter on my boyu tank has a flow rate of 370 liters per hour. Is there a chance of the shrimps getting pulled in or being affected because of the water flow?
4. I dose macros and micros along with Azoo carbon plus. Will any of these affect the shrimps?
Can you all please help me with this?
Thanks,
Amit |

1. Red Cherry Shrimps (Both will do the job in the same way but Crystal red needs a lot more care than RCS. )
2. Red Cherry Shrimps will be easily available. (Cost of Cystal red is more than 10 times of RCS)
3. There is a chance that the shrimp fries are pulled by the filter. It is happening to me while using canister.
4. If your dosage is correct, there are no issues. |

Hi Sujo,
Thanks for the response.
I shall look out for Cherry red shrimps and would try something like you so that the fries are not pulled in by the filter.
Do the shrimps breed a lot/frequently?
Thanks,
Amit |

| Yes. RCS will breed a lot if the environment is good for them. |

Neo-cardina shrimps like red cherry are easy to keep.
There are various colors of neo-cardina like deep red-sakura,
yellow fire, blue velvet, pearl (light blue) shrimps, snow ball shrimps, etc.
Rili shrimps like red rili, blue rili, yellow rili.
Japonica (amano) shrimps live in freshwater but larvae of these shrimps are know to survive only in salt water.
Before going onto expensive shrimps like CRS, CBS, Tiger shrimps or Sulawesi shrimps.
These need perfect water conditions CRS, CBS, Tiger shrimps need 23 degrees aprx.and Sulawesi have to be kept above 26 degrees.
You have to keep a check on water parameters like PH, KH, GH, TDS, etc.
Sulawesi are known to be most difficult to keep.
Most hobbyists advice to keep them in tanks above 20 gallons (aprx.80 lts) to keep the water parameters stable. But you need to change 10-15 percent water i.e. RO water every week for that you need a RO unit
Think 20 gallons with CRS how are to going to keep it cool during summers? You'll need a Chiller, that means electricity bill will rise !!!
it is better to learn how to raise hardy shrimps from Neo-cardina family. |
