| From first photo it is looks to me a female boesemani. The second photo is confusing little - not sure whether this photo has some shadows. |

Yes, I too consider the 1st one to be a Boesemani female. But I have 2 of them, and they seem to be engaging in 'friendly flaring' and going around each other?!
Nidhi, the 2nd one doesn't seem to be Splendida, because it lacks the blue shades and the red fins. Can be a turquoise (Melanotaenia lacustris) as Lawrence says. But not sure.
And do rainbows cross breed? Or the females simply lay eggs (which are then fertilized by males outside)? |

| @neelmohur, Horizontal type looks to me a turquoise cross bred. Not sure as more clear pictures of color can clarify. |

I doubt if the first pic is that of a female bosemani. Almost all female bosemani ( juveniles or adult ) will have 1-2 black vertical stripes midway.
The stripes are generally thinner and can be seen with some observation. But I do not see any such thing in the first pic.
So, I doubt if it is a female bosemani. |

Recently I came across a book called 'Encyclopedia of Aquarium fish & Plants'.
It's published by DK & it has seperate sections about.
1.General Fishkeeping & setting up the tank
2.Directory of Tropical fish
3.Directory of Marine fish
4.Directory of pond fish
5.Directory of Plants
One thing which stands out is the quality of pictures provided in this book for each species of Fish.
I thought, it's good to share this information, if someone wants to have nearly a complete directory of fish, this is a must buy book.
