Hi  gurus  please  Check  my  project  report  and  give  your  expert  comments.

Facts:  Hi  this  is  my  existing  tank,  which  I  got  a  year  back.  Till  date  I  had  kept  as  community  tank  with  weird  combo  of  gold  fish  and  silver  dollar  ;-).  After  visiting  IAH  now  changing  this  tank  to  planted  tank.  Since  this  is  my  trial  project,  I  am  going  to  do  a  low-tech  lowlight  tank  keeping  major  setup  as  it  is.

Location:  Mumbai  and  in  my  living  room,  near  TV

Figures:  Its  readymade  china  made  molded  glass  bow  front  with  PVC  frame  &  hood  and  inbuilt  light  &  top  filter.  Tank  Size  23”LX12”DX16"H  -  75Ltr  –  19  US  G.  Fitted  with  2  X  13W  blue  white  CFL  with  reflector  and  cover  –  26W  means  approx   1W   Per  G.

 PROPOSED  PLAN
From  existing  setup:  I  am  going  to  cut  &  remove  stock  top  filter  and  will  have  new  filter  (as  suggested  by  nanomania)  and  light  bulbs.  So  only  from  existing  setup  I  am  keeping  tank,  hood  and  light  fitting  as  it  is.  Need  help  for  how  to  clean  the  tank  properly.

Tank  base  mat  –  20  mm  tho  white  packinhg  foam  sheet  sticker  on  acp  sheet

Filter  :  Dolphin  F800  internal  filter  rated  with  300L/H,  two  filter  media  –  Scrubber  and  Carbon.  Going  to  DIY  spray  bar  out  of  perforated  pipe  from  existing  top  filter.  After  1  month  carbon  will  be  replaced  by  filter  moss  and  ceramic  rings.

Light  :   2  X  13W  new  normal  CFL  bulbs  from  Osram  6500K.  Color  daylight  no  83  or  85(  need  to  check).  This  light  fitting  is  screwed  to  hood  which  we  can  remove  hence  in  future  it  will  be  replaced  with  LED  lights.  Additional  12  inch  long  blue  color  submersible  tube  already  with  me.

Light  duration  :  2Hrs  in  the  morning  and  4  Hrs  in  the  evening.

Substrate:  ADA  new  Amazonia  Powdered  soil  2”  thk  excluding  slop  –  6  Ltr  total  qty  and  top  with  brown  river  sand  1”  thk  over  soil  –  15  KG  total  qty.  Need  Help

CO2  :  space  constrains  to  keep  CO2  setup  hence  no  Co2  gas.  Planning  less  demanding  plant  hence  will  be  liquid  Co2  from  seachem.  Even  not  in  future  till  I  get  some  magic  carbon  wand.  Need  help

Fertiliser  :as  of  now  Glut-  today  only  saw  old  thread  about  glut.  I  will  check  another  option  or  I  will  take  help  from  the  members  who  are  already  using  it  like  nanomania  and  Mortis  from  Mumbai.  Need  help

Rock  and  Driftwood  :  I  have  which  I  am  using  since  1  year  check  Pic.

Additional  Material  :  Water  conditioner  from  Seachem

Plants  :  Less  Demanding  Plants,  Java  Fern  and  Java  Moss.  Need  help  please  suggest.

Fish  :  12  Neon  or  Cardinal,  12  RCS,  5  Live  Bearers.

 Action  –  ADA  soil  –  river  sand-driftwood-rocks-  little  water  –plants-full  water-filter  on-light  on-7  days-Fish-RCS

Maintenance:  Water  change50%  first  week  2  times-  then  every  week  30%

Fish  Food  –  Azoo  micro  pallet,  Weekly  blood  worms,  Dry  worms,  Tetra  mini.

Fffffeeeewwwwwww  I  think  I  have  covered  everything  please  tell  me  if  I  have  missed  anything.  Smile

Project  start  date  August  first  week  Smile

i  thibk  its  better  if  you  add  one  more  13  watt  light.  In  plants,  you  can  have  anubias,  amazon  swords, crypts, saggiteria, valisneria, pigmy  chain  sword.  Btw  why  you  are  capping  up  ada  with  river  sand.  Use  one  soil  it  is  better.Keep  a  pair  of  ottos  for  algae  control.l

 thank  you  jabbaji

i  thibk  its  better  if  you  add  one  more  13  watt  light.  -  with  default  light  fitting  I  can  fit  only  2  lamps  Or  can  I  use  higher  wattage  lamps  like  18  w  X  2

In  plants,  you  can  have  anubias,  amazon  swords, crypts, saggiteria, valisneria, pigmy  chain  sword.  -  ok

Btw  why  you  are  capping  up  ada  with  river  sand.  Use  one  soil  it  is  better.   -  I  don't  like  that  Ada  soil  artificial  look.  Mine  soil  will  be  exposed  no  carpet  plant  hence  I  want  that  natural  river  bed  look.  I  will  reduce  thickness  of  river  sand

Keep  a  pair  of  ottos  for  algae  control.-  somebody  suggested  to  introduce  ottos  after  1  month.  Stocking  mentioned  by  me  is  ok.?

Hi  vicky,  a  few  suggestions  for  you

1]  Filter  :  Go  for  an  external  canister  filter  if  your  budget  allows,  I  would  suggest  Eheim  2215.  Ideally  in  a  planted  tank  you  would  need  10X  tank  volume  flow,  So  you  need  around  700  lph  in  filters.  So  go  for  2x  400  lph  power  filters  or  your  existing  filter  plus  an  HOB  of  4-500lph.  Since  you  are  not  using  CO2  gas  HOB  will  be  fine  in  your  tank.  Dont  use  activated  carbon  just  go  for  a  mix  of  sponge  (  course  +  fine)  along  with  biological  media  like  ceramic  rings  in  both  filters

2]  Lighting  :  if  you  have  CFL  bulbs,  the  socket  type  then  go  for  2  x  18W  bulbs.  Colour  cool  white,  6500K  and  I  think  860  or  865  from  OSram  not  83.  I  would  suggest  using  the  2x  13W  for  the  1st  month  till  the  tank  settles  and  then  upgrading  to  2  x  18W  or  2  x  16W

3]  Substrate  is  probably  ok,  others  can  comment

4]  CO2  &  Ferts  :  what  you  have  gotten  wrong  is  that  Glut  is  a  form  of  liquid  carbon  and  is  not  a  fertilizer.  I  would  suggest  using  Glut  daily  +  liquid  fertlizer  atleast  once  a  week  after  water  change  even  yough  you  have  a  fertlie  soil.

5]  WCs  :  With  ADA  do  atleast  30%  change  on  alternate  days  for  first  2  weeks  atleast

6]  Fish  :  Introduce  only  after  one  month  of  cycling  with  filters  on  24/7.  Introduce  only  few  at  a  time  say  3  pairs  a  week

7]  Plants  :  As  mentioned  get  some  crypts  and  anubias  as  well  (crypts  are  little  cheaper)  and  fill  the  tank  with  as  many  plants  as  you  can  so  that  there  is  less  chance  of  algae

The  fish  I  suggested  were  for  algae  control.  You  can  still  add  your  12  neons  and  rcs  to  the  tank  no  issues.
Otos  would  help  with  your  diatoms  (otos  should  be  kept  at  least  3  or  more)
 Yamatos  for  the  hair  algae
 SAE  for  beard  algae.

I  have  few  doubts  and  little  confused

1]  Filter  :  Go  for  an  external  canister  filter  if  your  budget  allows,  I  would  suggest  Eheim  2215.  Ideally  in  a  planted  tank  you  would  need  10X  tank  volume  flow,  So  you  need  around  700  lph  in  filters.  So  go  for  2x  400  lph  power  filters  or  your  existing  filter  plus  an  HOB  of  4-500lph.  Since  you  are  not  using  CO2  gas  HOB  will  be  fine  in  your  tank.  Dont  use  activated  carbon  just  go  for  a  mix  of  sponge  (  course  +  fine)  along  with  biological  media  like  ceramic  rings  in  both  filters  ----  if  I  increase  filter  then  there  will  be  too  much  currents  and  flows  in  the  water  is  this  ok  with  plants?  Also  what  is  connection  of  HOB  and  co2  please  tell  me  more.

2]  Lighting  :  if  you  have  CFL  bulbs,  the  socket  type  then  go  for  2  x  18W  bulbs.  Colour  cool  white,  6500K  and  I  think  860  or  865  from  OSram  not  83.  I  would  suggest  using  the  2x  13W  for  the  1st  month  till  the  tank  settles  and  then  upgrading  to  2  x  18W  or  2  x  16W-  -----just  now  got  15  w  and  20  w  screw  type  lamps  from  havels  and  it's  6500k  cool  day  light.  So  now  I  will  fit  15w  and  after  1  month  if  get  18w  I  will  use  or  I  will  go  for  20w  is  it  ok.

3]  Substrate  is  probably  ok,  others  can  comment

4]  CO2  &  Ferts  :  what  you  have  gotten  wrong  is  that  Glut  is  a  form  of  liquid  carbon  and  is  not  a  fertilizer.  I  would  suggest  using  Glut  daily  +  liquid  fertlizer  atleast  once  a  week  after  water  change  even  yough  you  have  a  fertlie  soil.-----  I  need  correct  my  basics.  Need  more  googling.  I  am  planning  to  use  azoo  products  for  this.

5]  WCs  :  With  ADA  do  atleast  30%  change  on  alternate  days  for  first  2  weeks  atleast?  Ok

6]  Fish  :  Introduce  only  after  one  month  of  cycling  with  filters  on  24/7.  Introduce  only  few  at  a  time  say  3  pairs  a  week.------  if  fish  is  not  there  then  who  will  help  to  cycle  the  tank.  Or  plant  and  soil  will  do  the  job.

7]  Plants  :  As  mentioned  get  some  crypts  and  anubias  as  well  (crypts  are  little  cheaper)  and  fill  the  tank  with  as  many  plants  as  you  can  so  that  there  is  less  chance  of  algae----  ok

 Thank  you  mortis
