|

I want to refresh my aquarium. Initially I wanted to establish a planted tank, but now taking into consideration the budget, time and equipments for a planted tank, I think a community cichlid tank is more suitable.
I have no idea about which kind of cichlid to keep, as most of them are quite aggressive. My tank size is 4 ft x 1.5 ft x 1.5 ft.
Also can I keep Discus and/or angels with other cichlids? I currently have a severum and a male auratus.
Cichlids are diggers, so what kind of substrate is suitable for cichlids? A few hardy plants that can survive with them? (anubias nana, java fern). Average tank temp is 29 C!
What other kinds of fishes/Shrimps can I keep with these fishes? |

You can try Malwai Cichlids, they are relatively less aggressive and dont get too big.
They are colorful , and very active. Male auratus can get a little too aggressive, but make sure u provide lot of hiding places.
You can keep discuss among them too.
You can keep any substrates and few hardy plants like Anubias varieties. |

Would be grateful if someone can post the names of the cichlids that are non-aggressive. Also, to keep discus, don't we need a bare-bottom tank?
Also any kind of shrimps that can be kept with cichids? |

I have not seen any other cichlids kept along with Discus!!!!
And hardly shrimps would go along with Discus. With-in no time all your shrimps would be eaten up by Discus... |

You can go with Malawi or tanganyikan cichlids.
Substrate - any substrate would do. A white sand would be eye catchy.
Tanganyikan Cichlids would be more costlier than Malawians.
So depending on your budget, you can decide.
If you have any plans of keeping discus be sure that you have sufficient time to dedicate for them.
Thanks, |

Fish compatibility
I suppose Discus should be kept only in a species tank! |

Keep malawians.
U can try, orange morph, yellow morph, blue morph(yellow later on ) ,powder blue, electric blue peacock, golden yellow peacocks, rusty, white morph, ahils etc. there are commonly known names known by the LFS ppl here in india..
Or u an keep a school of fronts, which are expensive.
Discus keeping is not so easy as told. if u can keep regular water changes, why not! |

Rajdeep: Considering the fact that you left the idea for planted tank due to budget and time. I strongly suggest you, not to go for discus. They need good amount of both.
If you want to save time you will have to buy big Discus for a fortune....
If you want to save money you will have to buy small discus and spend quite a Lot lot lot lot of time and water to raise them.
I would suggest you to go with cichlids that may not grow too big so that you may not have to invest a lot on the filter as well.
Also keep the number of fishes low.
If you are going with small chiclids that may grow big in future, It will not look great even on a 4 feet tank, also you cannot keep a good number and also you need a verrry verrry good filter. |

For a planted tank better go for ram cichlids and if you have enough vegetation and hiding places you can keep shrimps too and there are a lot of planted aquarium fishes which are compatible with them. And if u want to go for discus better go for species only bb tank. It suits them more.and in long run your fishes will be happy.

Vishnu |
