 Hi  all,

Request  you  all  to  please  help  in  curing  my  discus  wound.  It  started  with  a  small  white  pimple  like  bump  on  the  center,  which  later  on  tore  and  looks  like  a  wound,  there  are  no  sharp  items  in  the  tank,  I  had  recently  moved  the  fishes  using  a  net  and  I  doubt  it  if  got  hurt  somehow,  but  not  sure  as  I  don't  see  any  other  reason.

I  am  attaching  a  pic  of  my  snow  white  discus,  I  don't  know  what's  wrong,  I  have  moved  it  to  a  quarantine  tank.

 Thanks  in  advance,

 Update  you  location.

its  chlorine  burns  I  think.  Is  white  skin  peeling  off?

please  dont  laugh  or  ridicule,  I  have  done  this  myself  and  got  good  results,  I  saved  my  fishes  once  (BD's)  you  can  use  an  antibiotic  ointment  like  sofracot/soframycin  on  its  skin.  apply  it  with  the  help  of  a  earbud  very  gently.  it  will  heal  slowly,  do  4  times  water  changes  atleast  50%  and  keep  it  away  from  light.  feed  it  normally.  water  quality  should  be  realy  good  at  all  times.  good  luck

I  know!  A  lot  of  people  will  protest  after  reading  this  like  before.  Crying or Very sad

dont  add  salt  with  open  wounds

if  it  is  eating  add  antibiotics  like  terramicyn  in  food,  if  not  eating  give  same  medicine  as  bath
dont  add  salt/formaline/PP/methylene  blue  with  open  wounds.

Salt  is  not  a  good  option  for  open  wound.  Keep  the  water  clean  with  medication  like  antibiotics.

 HERE  IS  COMMENT  FROM  MASTER

 Hi,

This  could  be  caused  primarily  by  parasites......and  one  of  them  may  be  costia.  Costia  can  dislodge  the  scales  when  they  are  in  uncontrollable  proportion(but  this  may  not  be  the  only  cause).

After  the  scales  are  dislodged...it  naturally  leads  to  damage  of  the  epidermis  too.

Then  comes  to  secondary  infection  by  bacteria.  And  the  main  bacterium  that  can  cause  ucler-like  wounds  is  Aeromona  Hydrophilla  which  is  an  opportunist  and  pathogenic  when  triggered  and  the  attack  is  rapid.

As  the  wound  gets  larger,  more  blood  and  salt  leached  out  leading  to  insufficient  blood  supply  to  that  area  hence  less  immune  soldiers  to  fight  the  invaders.....and  the  wound  gets  worse.  Further  to  that,  loss  of  salt  leads  to  dehydration.

Therefore  it  is  expected  that  when  a  discus  is  at  this  stage,  the  whole  body  is  stiff  and  the  death  is  generally  caused  by  dehydration  and  loss  of  blood.

Just  to  bear  in  mind:  Not  just  any  antibiotic  will  work.....as  Aeromonas  are  resistant  to  many  antibiotics.

Treatment:  Appropriate  antibiotic(s)  plus  200gms  of  common  salt  per  100  litres  of  water  for  a  period  of  2  weeks  or  till  it  recovers.

***But  at  chronic  stage,  it  is  extremely  hard  to  save.

 Take  care,
 Andrew

If  it  is  same  like  mine  I  lost  2  Adult  (5.5")  Discus  ........but  able  to  save  another  2  with  above  treatment.

 As  a  antibiotic,  I  used  tetra-cyline.

According  to  the  picture  it  looks  like  same  disease  like  mine.  But  I  hope  it  was  not.

 Best  of  Luck.

You  can  do  it.  It  will  require  dedication  and  constant  watch.  I  have  saved  mine,  2  of  them.  Believe  me.  the  wound  will  narrow  down  slowly,  It  will  take  about  2  weeks  a  little  more  in  your  case.  Look....saving  a  fish  gives  you  utmost  satisfaction  in  this  hobby.  It  is  much  better  than  achieving  a  high  rated  planted  tank...  believe  me.  This  is  a  big  challenge,  take  it  and  you  will  feel  extremely  blessed.  God  helps  those  who  help  themselves  Thumb Up

 You  can  try  below.

1)Remove  this  discus  in  to  clinical  tank  .
2)Remove  the  sponge  filters  and  only  keep  air  stone  with  good   aeration  .
3)Plug  on  heater  and  maintain  the  Tank  temp  at  28deg  .  (  due  to  raining  water  temp  must  have  droped  a  bit  )  .
 4)  Dose  with  Antibiotics  -  try  Oxytetracyclin  @2gm  for  100ltrs  .
 5)Add  Salt  -  dosage  100gms  for  100  ltrs  .
6)Every  alternate  day  ,  do  50%WC  and  redose  with  Antobiotics  and  Salts  -  dosage  as  per  the  water  replaced  .  Add  Antibiotics  and  Salt   before   adding  new  water  to  the  tank  .
 7)  Continue  this   for  12  days  .

 Thanks

Thanks  a  LOT...Abhis9,  SuPro,  garothmaan,  aquariumer  &  Shiva  for  your  inputs.
I  just  hope  that  it  is  not  the  same  what  Abhis9  experienced  &  that  it's  not  too  late  for  the  treatment,  I  have  never  had  a  problem  with  my  discus  for  the  past  4  years  that  I've  kept  them,  but  whatever  it  is  I  will  take  care  &  follow  the  necessary  steps  as  advised  by  the  experienced  fish  keepers/  breeders  here...will  keep  you  guys  posted.
