Well.. UV and CFL are better. Normal bulbs produce unnecesary heat too. |

Sergio,
If you mean those round incandescent bulbs.. then you can't use it for planted tanks, but you can use it for fish only tanks.
Instead you can Use CFL or Tube lights, these bulbs are more efficient at giving more light than those old tech bulbs.. |

@Serigo: U can use the round incadescent bulb, but you need to control the temperature of the tank. |

As karthik already said, need to deal with more heat.. and need more wattage compared to CFL and tube light to put out the same light, and you never know when they will pop.. that's my view.. |

Nidhi,
People were growing plants using Incandescent lamps for eons now. Except for the disadvantage of Power consumption and heat generation( in common with Metal halides) it gives the best spectrum of light for growing plants.
Check the bulbs in the aquarium behind Trevor? We were growing all sort of plants in that aquarium. This was the ASK room in Cubbon park.

Nayak, I too had them in my plated tanks long back with satisfactory results.. I was just pointing to a better option, may be I didn't put it in the right way. |

You can use them without any problem.
However nowadays CFL are available at very reasonable costs, also they use the same holders as regular bulbs.
A normal 100 watt regular bulb produces 1400 lumens of light energy, a lot of power is wasted as heat.
On the other hand a 100 watt CFL produces 6250 lumens of light energy.
It depends on your usage. |

technically there is no reason why you cant use the traditional incandescent bulbs. however it consume more power, produces heat and give Golden yellow light
on the other hand, the CFL give more lights/ watt and bright white light.
CFL is expensive with compare to traditional bulb.
the user need to decide what suits their requirement
Good Luck |
