Always keep a medium sponge filter for emergency situation. Electrical pump filters are called mechanical filters.
Yes, the sponge filter in above picture are appropriate. Now just select 1 which will not occupy too much space in the tank.
This will require an air pump, but a silent 1 please .
This sponge filter is good for cycling a new tank without substrate. Remember, a sponge filer is simple and good enough for a 2 ft tank, if you change the water (60%) daily.
And also buy 1 corner filter from kurla. very very very important filter
There is no filter like a corner filter. The advantage in a corner filter is, you can put atleast 3 different filter medias and run it for a whole month without any worries, if you insert active carbon on the top most end as media. |

Thanks deepak.. I visited kurla & have bought couple of stuff.. Since my tank was already a week old.
As you suggested, I bought sponge. But could only get cylindrical & similar to this in pic :
Am sure this should suffice & more functional than the existing big holes one . And replaced the existing media with this one after cutting in properly.
Following is how my tank looks like.. Some guppies, a pair of small black ghost, pair of hockey neon & a sucker so far.. with a small wood & artificial plants.. (forgive me for the image quality, though)
Any yeah.. The kurla market is enormous.. I went in noon & came out in dark
@garothmaan.. Am still light apprehensive with this power filter alone, considering the oxygen part. I think adding up a sponge filter, as you suggested should be perfect.. Unfortunately, when you posted this, I was admiring the fishes at kurla..
Will soon add a sponge/corner filter. |

Your black ghost is a night time predator. You will have missing guppies every night when he grpws up.I'll say give him back. Also your filter media is good. This time. |

Just reached home from work and say the wood which i kept in tank started fading out a bit. As the water color has turned little golden/woodish.. this color is extremely minor. Removed the wood though. I had washed the wood with hot water and left for sometime in it before putting in the tank, still unsure y thia happened..
Shall i do a max water change now of 60-70% or let it be.. please suggest!! |

Why are you not filling the tank to the top? |

Actually I read somewhere to leave marginal top portion, hence.! Shall I fill up till the brim, sir?
I was little afraid for the water to spatter on the light too. |

One inch from top is enough.
I might remove those bizarre coloured stones. |

Alright.. Will get it off today evening itself & replace them with light color ones..! As I notice my white sand getting too dirty with the poo quiet often . Though I siphon it..
Any suggestion if I can introduce the Air Curtain . I really love the look. |

That problem will be there with white colored substrate, that is why most of use use natural colored substrates. |
