 Hi  Friends,

Been  a  member  of  this  forum  for  quite  some  time  now  been  a  silent  observer  this  is  ma  first  post  so  wanna  say  Hi   Very Happy   to  alll

Ok  Now  this  is  the  situation,I  stay  in  Bangalore,I  have  had  a  50  gallon  chichlid  setup  up  until  now  which  I  gave  away  and  planning  to  setup  a  planted  one  now.

I  went  to  varios  shops  and  had  mixed  reviews.

1st  and  formost  the  tank  I  am  aiming  for  is  a  2*1*1  feet  L-B-H

2nd  The  Substrate  now  I  am  highly  confused  here  as  to  which  substrate  we  need  to  pick  ,I  want  to  go  with  Dwarf  hairgrass  in  the  foreground  and  will  use  DIY  Co2  setup  which, can  you  guys  suggest  me  some  options  here
I  have  visited  LFS  and  there  are  3  suggestions  on  the  table  as  of  now:
1)Caribsea  eco  complete  2  bags  and  Trace  elements  and  Flourish  (approximately  )

2)Some  aqua  soil  then  fert  tabs  and  on  top  of  that  contra  soil(Approx)  not  sure  about  this  too  is  this  a  good  option  ?

3)ADA  Amazonia  (Info  on  the  internet  not  sure  where  I  will  get  this  in  Bang  and  how  much  it  will  cost)

I  do  not  want  to  place  in  high  demanding  plants  but  I  want  that  whatever  goes  in  there  should  be  lush
 3rd  The  Lighting  I  will  have  2  T5  about  40  watts  total

Forgive  my  Ignorance  ,Please  let  me  know  if  this  setup  is  ok  ??

and  any  aquascaping  ideas  would  also  be  appreciated

sorry  for  the  delayed  reply..missed  the  post  -  IMO:

I  would  say  contact  Seetharam  (aquabynature.com-shop)and  get  yourself  a  10L  bag  of  controsoil  (2mm  preferred),  Ocean  free  absolute  plant  base  (box  is  of  1.5Kg),  ocean  free  root  sticks  (20  sticks).  This  is  what  I  personally  use,  you  can  follow  my  thread  to  see  the  plant  growth.

Hair  grass,  it's  a  plant  which  prefers  high  CO2  more  than  light,  so  you  have  already  included  a  high  demanding  plant,  DIY  CO2  is  not  enough  IMO  to  grow.

40W  T5  is  more  than  enough!  for  a  DIY  CO2  setup!

Why  d'nt  you  go  for  diy  you  have  a  plus  point  that  you  are  living  in  Bangalore(fish  heaven)

For  substrate  go  for  cocopeat  soil  its  rich  in  iron  ,  soil-rite  its  is  available  in  nurseries  ,,laterite  soil  its  easily  avaliable  there  or  contact  aquabynature.  mix  them  together  and  cover  it  with  brown  gravel  or  you  can  find  more  ways  how  to  use  them.

for  dosing  its  (DIY)N,P,K  you  can  get  from  chemical  shop  i  think  vardhman  chemical

for  light  just  put  a  CFL  of  45watts

 n  what  all  u  need???????

But  Since  I  am  new  to  this  so  I  prefer  to  go  by  the  readymade  soil  so  that  I  do  not  mess  up     Sad   while  mixing  the  soil

I  can  try  the  DIy  for  Dosing  since  that  can  be  started  after  a  week  of  the  setup  I  guess

You  have  a  good  amount  of  lights  for  a  12g  tank,  what  are  your  plans  for  co2  supplementation.
Without  co2  and  with  this  amount  of  light  you  will  have  algae  problems.
If  no  Co2,  cut  down  on  lights.
I  have  set  up  a  similar  tank  without  CO2,  it  might  give  you  some  ideas.

if  i  suggest  than  go  for  simple  stuff  like  river  sand  which  is  more  cheapest  n  base  fertilizer  of  jbl  aquabasis,  n  diy  co2,  with  diy  chemical  fertz  thats  it,  y  too  use  more  money  if  u  can  grow  in  simple  setup
the  plant  u  hav  mention  is  hair  grass  which  can  also  grow  in  low  tech  condition  with  only  diy  fertz  so  make  all  thing  clear  b4  makin  final  decission,

always  have  option  for  better  thing  but  u  need  to  hav  proper  knowledge  thats  all  u  need.

 Rajsophan

This  website  is  full  of  threads  that  talk  about  how  VArdhaman  Chemicals  started  making  fake  fertillizers  .  I  have  used  their  microsol  B  which  was  useless.  So  go  for  a  different  company.

just  my  two  cents..  Contrasoil  suggested  by  zico  is  yawsome!  Go  for  it.

Hey  dont  forget  a  good  external  filter.  An  Eheim  2213  would  be  best  so  dont  forget  to  factor  this  into  your  costs  as  well.

Easy/Low  maintenence  Foreground  :  Try  Marselia  hirsuta

Substrate  :  Dont  put  TOO  much  importance  into  your  substrate  as  you  will  be  dosing  liquid  fertilizers.  I  would  suggest  a  bag  of  ADA  Amazonia  or  Controsoil  if  you  want  an  all  in  one  substrate  and  if  budget  permits
 or
If  on  a  budget  a  thin  base  layer  of  cocopeat  +  vermicompost/JBL  Aquabasis/Soilrite  topped  up  by  an  inert  gravel  or  River  sand  of  around  3-4  mm  in  size.

You  can  supplement  your  DIY  CO2  with  Flourish  Excel  which  is  a  liquid  CO2  supplement

 Hi  Zico,
Why  do  we  need  Ocean  free  absolute  plant  base  and  ocean  free  root  sticks  ....
Controsoil  is  a  complete  fertile  base  right?

Also  what  about  ADA  amazonia  II  as  top  layer  and  Ada  power  sand  as  base.
ADA  power  sand   being  larger  granules

In  Chennai,  the  tap  water  is  very  very  hard...  Can  cocopeat  reduce  the  hardness  of  the  water?
