 Hi  marine  keepers,

My  Alk  is  pretty  low  at  around  5  dKh.
No  major  consumers  that  I  can  think  of.  Couple  of  shrooms  and  the  coralline  algae.
I'm  not  dosing  anything  at  the  moment.

Bioload  -  around  9  medium  to  small  fish  in  a   150  gallon  with  a  lot  of  liverock  running  for  about  a  couple  of  years.
WC  around  10-20%  once  in  2  -3  weeks.
Fresh  salt  mix  -  has  Kh  of  12.

Any  ideas  why  it  would  be  so  low  in  the  tank?

I  dont  know  the  pattern  and  if  it  drops  gradually  since  this  is  the  first  time  I  tested  for  Alk.  Will  figure  out  over  the  next  few  days.

 Ca  -  450
Ph  -  ~8  as  per  my  Seachem  kit  -might  be  a  little  off
 Kh  -  5
Mg  -  no  idea  since  my  test  kit  expired
 PO  ~  0.03

 Regards,
 Venkat

I  was  under  the  impression  that  once  a  tank  matures,   frequent  water  changes  may  not  be  required  unless  you  have  LPS  or  SPS.   For  a  FOWLER  are  regular  but  small  water  changes  adviseable.   Is  it  not  a  pain?  I  used  to  do  a  25%  change  every  2  months.  Please  advice  on  the  practical  aspects  also.

Water  changes  are  an  essential  part  of  any  marine  tank's  maintenance  schedule.  Mature  tanks  are  no  exception.

its  the  only  practical  and  cost  effective  way  to  dilute  undesirable  elements  and  introduce  required  trace  elements.

 The  "pain"  is  necessary  :-)

Just  went  through  the  pain  of  a  100%  water  change.  The  10%  change  for  future  would  be  less  painful  i  guess!!!

Off  the  top  of  my  head...  these  are  possibilities,  but  can't  say  to  what  extent.

 1.  Consumption  by  Coralline

What  test  kit/salt  are  you  using?  Have  you  actually  measured  the  kH  of  salt  once  mixed?

 Ok,  that's  very  strange!

Weird  that  Ca  seems  fine,  while  kH  does  not.  When  you  measured  your  salt  mix,  what  was  the  Ca  level  at?

kh  can  be  low  while  ca  is  high.
The  drop  in  ca  will  be  quite  small  compared  to  the  drop  in  kh.

BTW  -  CA  test  kit  is  ELOS

Agreed.  Point  being,  was  there  a  drop  from  measured  mix  levels?

You'd  probably  want  to  check  your  Mg  levels.

Veeral,  thanks  -   could  you  give  me  details.
I  assume  you  got  the  stuff  from  Dawa  bazaar  or  such.
How  much  do  you  mix.  Are  you  using  RO?

 Venkat

Yes,  i  get  all  my  stuff  from  there  as  im  also  into  chemical  business......  it  depends  on  howmuch  you  wana  rise.  i  add  2  tsp  of  sodium  carbonate  and  2  tsp  of  sodium  bi  carbonate  in  2gal  of  topup  water.  I  bought  a  Kent  Grand  Plus  water  purifier  as  it  has  RO,  UV,  Carbon,  Sediment  filter,  TDS  controller  &  some  more  stuff,  it  took  12  hrs  to  fill  my  30gal  lol  but  The  water  is  free  of  PO4  and  Si.  so  its  kinda  good.  i  use  it  for  my  weekly  WC  too.......
