Recently  I  had  the  oppurtunity  to  visit  the  desolate  streches  of  Ladakh  region.  The  place  I  visited  was  much  higher  than  the  famous  tourist  destination  Leh.  Habitation  was  extremely  sparse  .  The  elevation  of  the  place  was  13700  ft  AMSL  due  to  which  the  oxygen  content  is  very  low  wrecking  a  havoc  on  all  your  bodily  functions  ,  not  to  mention  sub  -  zero  temperatures. There  was  no  vegetation  to  be  seen  anywhere  except  for  a  hard  variety  of  grass  .  It  was  the  last  place  on  earth  where  I  expected  to  find  any  water  birds  as  I  expected  that  birds  migrate  to  warmer  climates  in  winter.

But  there  I  found  beatiful  well  fed  duck  swimming  or  wading  on  the  ice  in  the  numerous  water  bodies  which  must  be  originating  from  the  glaciers  on  the  Himalayas.

Well  fed  ducks  means  abundant  aquatic  life  Smile  .

Anyway  with  a  gleam  in  my  eyes  I  dragged  along  my  companions  to  examine  the  locations  in  the  hope  of  finding  some  aquatic  life  in  this  extreme  habitat.  I  knew  about  the  presence  of  trout  fish  which  swim  upstream  in  the  rapid  white  waters  ,  but  I  did  not  expect  to  find  them  here  in  this  extreme  climate.

There  were  two  different  varieties  of  ducks  which  used  to  fly  away  as  we  came  closer  .  I  had  to  shoot  them  in  zoom  mode.

Here  is  the  white  and  black  variety.

Here  is  the  brown  and  black  variety.

 Here  are  the  aquatic  plants

You  must  excuse  me  for  the  poor  quality  of  pictures  as  I  am  a  very  bad  photographer.

I  found  a  small  maroon  colored  fish  among  the  plants  shown  above.

However  the  icing  on  the  cake  was  when  I  saw  a  small  puddle  beside  the  water  body  which  was  frozen.  I  expected  to  find  some  fish  which  might  have  got  stranded  in  the  puddle.  My  expectations  bore  fruit  when  I  saw  a  small  fish  swimming  beneath  the  frozen  water  .  The  water  was  just  3  -  4  inches  deep.  I  did  not  have  the  gut  to  try  and  catch  the  fish  in  the  icy  cold  weather  though  in  normal  circumstances  it  would  be  very  easy  to  do  so.  Anyway  I  have  a  video  of  the  fish  which  I  shall  soon  upload.

No  way  these  plants  would  not  survive  a  single  day  in  the  plains.  More  narrative  and  pics  to  follow  as  soon  as  I  collect  pics  from  friends  cam.

One  more  pics  .  This  shows  the  small  still  water  bodies  .  I  had  spotted  more  fish  in  the  fast  flowing  Indus  river  the  winds  across  the  montain  as  we  came  down  swimming  upstream  .  Will  try  to  post  videos  soon.

The  plants  were  definitely  unlike  those  seen  in  the  plains.  They  seemed  to  have  thick  narrow  leaves  with  hard  stem.  Catching  fish  was  too  risky  ,  temperatures  were  reaching  -9  c  and  the  water  was  frozen  at  many  places  even  under  bright  sun.

The  birds  are  bar  headed  geese  and  ruddy  shelduck.

Primarily  vegetarian  although  the  shelduck  does  feed  on  water  molluscs.

You  are  fortunate  to  visit  this  region.

 Regards,
 Venkat
