PostPosted: Thu Nov 01, 2012 1:24 pm Post subject: My Wish for a planted tank comes true. Update Reply with quote

After  going  through  numerous  posts  in  the  forum  and  reading  loads  and  loads  about  planted  tanks  ,  my  adventurous  mind  wanted  to  try  my  hand  in  planted  aquarium.  Previous  experience  was  a  cement  tank  and   a  2  feet  tank  with  potted  plants  without  co2.  So  I  decided  to  have  a  ty  at  planted  tank  as  on  a  trail  where  if  things  didn't  go  well  I  don't  wanted  to  be  disappointed  or  having  spent  too  much  money  which  went  wasted.  So  the  plan  was  do  as  much  as  DIY  and  experiment  basis  to  see  how  they  go.

My  tank  specifications  are  as  following

 36"  Width
 16"  Height
 18"  Depth

 Filtration
Rs-308  TopFilter  with  ceramic  rings  and  fine  floss  and  mesh

 Lights  -  2  CFLs  +  1  PL  fitted  on  hood,  each  14W

CO2  -  DIY  setup  with  dual  2  litre  bottles  on  rotation

 Plants  -
 1)  Giant  saggitaria
 2)  ludwigia  repens
 3)  Cryptocoryne  species.
 4)  Dwarf  Saggitaria
 5)  Rotala  Rotundifolia
 6)  riccia  fluitans
 7)  Microsorum  pteropus  (  Java  fern)
 Cool  green  and  red  cabomba
 9)Ceratopteris  thalictroides  (  Water  Sprite)
 10)Hydrocotyle  leucocephala  (  Pennywort)
 11)Polysperma  Green
 12)  Couple  of  amazon  swords
1  or  2  plants  which  I  don't  know  the  names.  criteria   while  choosing  plants  was  suitable  for  low  light  and  low  tech

For  the  plants  special  thanx  goes  to  our  members  Ashok(freakyboyz)  &  Sujo

 Substrate   :  DIY
thin  layer  of  laterite  mixed  with  Kcl,  second  layer  with  peatmoss+cocopeat,  a  1  to  1.5  inch  third  layer  with  Mineralized  top  soil  topped  with  1  to  1.5  inch  coarse  sand

 After  a  month  the  result?

Crazy  growth  of  plants  and  realization  of  tank  space  restrictions  which  resulted  unplanned  uprooting  and  trimming  of  plants.  Trimmed  all  plants  bit  too  heavy  and  lost  my  red  cobombas  almost  .  Other  than  that  very  happy  with  still  growing  plants

Wanted  to  thank  all  those  who  shared  their  valuable  experience  of  planted  tanks  here,  without  that  I  dont  think  I  would  have  dared  or  dreamed  to  have  a  planted
 tank.

 My  Tank  pic  is  here

parthapratim22,  rodney,  angel_lover,  GANESAA,  girlcookart  Thank  you  guys.

@  angel_lover  as  long  as  you  guys  are  around  I  should  be  able  to  maintain  it  without  much  trouble  I  suppose  :)

@girlcookart  Will  do,  in  fact  getting  the  fishes  I  want  here  is  a  big  problem,  got  a  dozen  of  Neon  Tetras  and  3  pairs  of  Denisonii  barbs.  But  lost  3  Denisoniis  due  to  white  spot  disease.  So  gave  the  Denisoniis  back  LFS  and  treated  the  neon  tetras  and  could  save  all  of  them.  But  I  really  feel  sad  loosing  those  beautiful  denisonii  barbs

So  currently  I  have  12  Neons  and  3  Oto  cats

Would  lov  to  get  some  RCS,  but  here  in  Ajmer,  its  very  tough  to  get  them  though  I  keep  pestering  my  LFS  for  the  kind  of  fishes  I  would  like  to  have  Smile

It'll  turn  out  well.  You  have  had  more  success  than  I  have,  because  for  the  first  year  I  didn't  even  know  the  basics  of  keeping  a  tank  and   lost  dozens  of  fish  for  my  lack  of  knowledge.

 I  have  a  doubt  if  14  x  3  =  42watts  of  light  is  enough  for  the  tank.....

thank  you  girlcookart,  it  was  all  about  reading  as  much  as  I  can  before  I  started  this  tank

Thank  you  Vinod,  appreciate  it  mate

@Jabba  If  you  noticed  the  plants  I  have  ,  they  are  all  falls  under   low  light  requirement.  But  do  you  suggest  to  add  some  more  PLs  to  increase  the  lighting?

As  per  my  understanding  riccia, pennyworth  and  water  sprite  needs  heavy  light.  I  may  be  wrong  about  pennyworth  and  water  sprite  but  I  am  quite  sure  about  riccia

Pennyworth  I  agree  as  its  taking  time  to  grow,  but  I  was  keeping  water  sprite  without  much  light  and  it  was  thriving  there  and  in  this  tank  this  was  growing  like  weed  and  I  pulled  it  off  as  I  couldn't  keep  trimming  it  every  week  Smile  o  water  sprite  is  out  of  my  tank  now  Smile
AFA  Riccas  ,  they  looks  happy  I  think,  have  a  look  them  in  the  below  video

Ooops  I  am  having  problem  with  plugins   so  I  am  posting  a  link  To  Video  Here
