 Hi  guys,

 After  a  lot  of  research  on  the  net  which  included  lurking  on  IAH  for  about  a  year,  I  finally  started  my  own  planted  tank(would  refrain  from  calling  it  an  aquascape  yet  ¬†Smile  )
 Specs;
 Tank  Size:  30  x  15  x  18
 Lighting:  2  x  36W  PLLs
 Filtration:  SOBO  Internal  WP-1301F  -  600  l/h
 Substrate:  CocoPeat  +  Red  River  Sand
 CO2:  DIY  Sugar  +  Yeast
 WC:  30%  twice  a  week
 Flora:  Dwarf  Saggitaria,  Giant  Saggitaria,  Polysperma,  Water  Wisteria,  Compacta,  Rotunda  Rotundafolia,  Hemianthus  Micranthemoides
 Fauna:  2  Neon  Rainbows,  2  Mickey  Mouse  Platys,  1  Oto
 Obituary:  1  Rainbow  due  to  Columnaris,  1  Oto

 For  fertilization,  I  tried  a  few  experiments  such  as  adding  humic  acid  to  the  bottommost  layer  of  cocopeat.  Also  added  a  few  grains  of  supphala  which  is  an  agricultural  NPK  fert.  So  far  I  havent  seen  any  adverse  effects.

 A  few  pics:
 Day1:

 Day  36:

 Random:

 I  am  currently  facing  a  few  issues:
 1.  I  want  to  add  more  rainbows  to  the  tank  along  with  cardinals.  Given  that  they  are  schooling  fish,  can  I  add  rainbows  of  different  types  to  make  up  the  numbers?  for  eg.  a  pair  each  of  scarlet,  ¬†boesemani  and  threadfin  rainbows.

 2.  As  the  last  photo  suggests,  I  am  currently  dealing  with  green  water.  In  earlier  days  I  have  faced  hair,  brown  and  green-spot  algae  which  has  reduced  now.  Is  this  natural  for  a  new  tank  or  is  there  a  major  imbalance?

 3.  I  want  to  add  dwarf  hairgrass  to  the  empty  areas.  With  DIY  Co2  and  my  lighting,  is  it  advisable?

 4.  The  leaves  of  most  plants  (Dwarf  sagittaria  in  particular)  are  longish  and  pale  green  in  color.  They  were  dark  green  when  i  planted  them.  What  could  be  the  reason  for  this?

 Your  inputs  on  the  tank  and  help  on  the  issues  would  be  greatly  welcome.

 Thanks,
 Pankaj

 Dear
 You  have  nice  growth  of  plants,  meaning  light  and  CO2  doing  somewhat  fine.  I  do  not  have  much  experience  with  that.
 Dark  color  is  probably  because  your  aquarium  has  not  yet  reached  maturity  in  terms  of  nitrogen  balance.  It  takes  about  6-8  weeks  and  in  smaller  ones,  even  up  to  3  months.  Till  that  time,  just  increase  WC  to  50%  per  week  or  twice  weekly,  run  your  filter  24x7,  and  restrain  fishes  and  their  food.  A  larger  water  change  will  clean  it  quickly  but  will  be  same  after  a  week  since  nitrogen  produced  by  fishes  is  more  than  that  consumed  by  flora.

 Have  patience,  your  tank  will  stablize  after  some  time.
 Green  water  might  be  due  to  terrestrial  fert  you  are  using,  they  are  mostly  ammonia  based,  which  creates  problems  in  aquariums.
 Start  using  Kno3,   and  kh2po4  for  fertilization.

 Here  are  my  answers.

 1.  rainbow  fishes  other  than  neon  rainbow  and  thread  fin  rainbow  will  be  large  for  the  tank
 2.  I  feel  if  you  add  a  filter  with  some  media  space  and  put  in  some  ceramic  rings  and  large  aqua  clay  balls  your  issue  will  be  resolved  as  these  things  will  give  more  space  for  bacteria  growth.  But  I  am  not  sure  about  this  but  it  will  not  do  any  harm
 3.  It  will  work  out  only  thing  is  growth  will  be  little  slow  but  still  it  will  work  out
 4.  Yellowing  of  plants  is  due  to  potassium  deficiency.  Please  post  your  dosing  details.  Some  times  it  might  be  because  your  plants  are  getting  transformed  from  emersed  state  to  submerged  state

 Thanks  for  the  suggestions  guys.  The  tank  is  now  3  months  old  and  seems  to  have  stabilized  (  the  algae  is  gone).  Below  are  a  few  latest  pics:

 @Sandeep,
 You  are  right  I  think  the  algae  issues  were  caused  by  the  terrestrial  fert  I  added  to  the  substrate,  once  that  was  over,  algae  has  reduced.

 @  Jabba,
 i  came  across  a  few  35  Gal  tanks  which  housed  rainbows,  so  I  went  ahead  and  added  a  few.  I  currently  have  1  Boesemani  and  2  Scarlet  Rainbows.  I  am  planning  to  add  only  1  more  boesemani  and  stop.  Additionally  I  have  2  platys,  2  neon  rainbows  and  1  ram.  The  bows  seems  to  be  doing  fine  for  now.

 Currently  I  dont  dose  anything.  Just  last  week  start  dosing  micros  with  Microsol-B  15ml  3  times  a  week.  There  have  been  discussions  about  it  being  useless,  but  I  am  using  what  I  can  get.  I  am  still  searching  for  KNO3.  As  the  last  pic  shows  I  am  dealing  with  serious  nutrient  deficiencies  now.  The  sagittaria  is  still  very  pale  green  but  it  has  spread  a  lot.  I  have  also  added  some  dwarf  hairgrass,  lets  see  how  it  goes.

 In  the  meantime,  I  am  supplementing  DIY  Co2  with  Glut.  Will  this  affect  the  dwarf  sagittaria  and  hairgrass?

 Thanks,
 Pankaj

 Very  good  progress  be  careful  with  the  quantity  of  Glut  you  use  (Not  More  than  10ml  at  a  time).

 I  see  no  deficiency  in  the  last  set  of  pics  posted.

 Thanks  a  lot  for  the  encouragement  guys!

 @Thuds,  the  deficiency  is  not  evident  in  the  pics  but  I  am  seeing  yellowing  of  the  wisteria  and  polysperma  along  with  crinkled  leaves.  I  think  thats  potassium  &  nitrogen  deficiency.  Am  I  right?

 Hopefully  I  should  get  KNO3  today.  Also  is  KH2PO4  absolutely  necessary  or  will  just  KNO3  do?

 @keluthi,
 Thanks  the  green  water  was  a  real  pain  to  get  rid  of  and  an  embarassment  when  guests  showed  up  Smile  .  Blackout  &  water  changes  was  the  best  way  to  get  rid  of  it.
