|
|
I am converting my 5 g tank to a shrimp tank..housing RCS. I wanted to make a cement coated Styrofoam background to add an element of 3D and fun into the scape. Is it safe to use such a background? If so ,which brand of cement to use? Please provide links for this DIY on IAH site.
Also which natural stones can be used safely in shrimp tank? |

i don't actually know if thats a good idea! the substrate should always be black/maroon for shrimps, reflected with white light so it will bring out the best colors of the shrimps. and actually best background would be white so it would be easier to spot the shrimps. but since its RCS i think a cement background would look nice. you'll have to coat the concrete with something, i don't know what that coat's called ask your LFS. |

Thankyou for pointing out the colours, as I would have clearly gone with my old light brown coloured aquaclay..I'll change that. I am not sure if the background will be safe for a shrimp tank...can anyone suggest me about that? |

well it is safe, i think it is because my friend was breeding cherry shrimps for a whole year in a concrete tank, but his had proper lighting and a heater. also he added some green water and algae every now and then to speeden the growth! oh moss growing on a cement background looks amazing! you should try it. |

my friend got it ready made from a potter. its actually a 3foot long concrete pot. but he's using it for shrimps, so i guess a cement pot with low amount of lime. |

Still not sure but I very much want to make a cement background for the shrimp tank.. it will have holes and crevices for them to explore, Also, it will contain some pot holes (upward...very much like a cavity) so I'll be putting in some substrate and plants in it. |

It'll be safe. But my friend said it needs a first coat of liquid concrete and then another coat for it to be waterproof. Leave it to dry for two days and its ready to use. |
