 Dear  Friends,

I  am  new  to  this  planted  tank.  I  am  now  having  3  kg.  co2  cylinder,  with  needle  valve,  set  up.  And  crossed  one  month.
The  adjustment  of  the  CO2  bubbles  are  not  constant  and  always  stops  intermittently.
Request  to  clarify  the  following  questions.
 1.   Why  regulators  are  used  and  what  is  single  stage  and  double  stage
 2.   If  we  use  which  one  we  have  to  select  i.e,  single  stage  or  double  stage
 3.   Which  is  the  best  make  in  the  above  two  regulators
 4.   What  is  solenoid  valve  and  why  we  should  use
 5.   Is  it  a  must  or  option
 6.   If  we  use  which  is  the  best  solenoid  valve

Information,  advice,  recommendations  from  the  IAH  members  are  invited.
 Thank  you  all.
 regards
 radjanair

 1.   Why  regulators  are  used  and  what  is  single  stage  and  double  stage
--Regulators  are  used  to  stabilize  the  direct  pressure  from  the  cylinder.  A  more  detailed  information  about  single  stage  and  dual  stage  regulators  can  be  read  here.

 http://www.barrreport.com/showthread.php/6470-Dual-Stage-Regulators

 2.   If  we  use  which  one  we  have  to  select  i.e,  single  stage  or  double  stage
--For  our  aquarium  needs  a  single  stage  is  more  than  enough  if  we  consider  the  cylinder  size  less  than  5kg.

 3.   Which  is  the  best  make  in  the  above  two  regulators
--I  would  go  for  ESAB,  but  again  such  heavy  duty  stuff  is  not  that  required.

 4.   What  is  solenoid  valve  and  why  we  should  use
--It  is  a  electric  valve  which  shuts/opens  your  CO2  flow  with  the  touch  of  a  button.  The  use  is  mostly  when  we  tend  to  switch  off  CO2  after  lighting  hours  and  switch  on  with  the  light.

 5.   Is  it  a  must  or  option
--Nope.  If  you  plan  to  run  your  CO2  24*7  then  a  solenoid  valve  is  not  required.

 6.   If  we  use  which  is  the  best  solenoid  valve
--There  varieties  available  in  the  market.  But  I  would  prefer  TECHNO  as  more  than  sufficient  for  our  usage.

 Hi  Ruchit,
Thank  You  for  the  information.   May  I  know  the  cost  of  ESAB,  where  and  when  you  have  purchase.   Please  inform  for  both

I  have  used  Esab  long  back  and  the  product  is  no  doubt  excellent.  I  am  currently  using  Yamato  and  its  service  is  also  so  far  good.  I  am  not  sure  where  in  Hyderabad  you  can  find  these  but  I  guess  any  gas  filling  shops  can  help  you  with  that  or  any  hobbyist  from  Hyderabad.  I  have  PMed  you  the  cost  of  it  in  Bangalore.

Forgot  to  mention,  your  inconsistent  bubbles  are  caused  due  to  faulty  needle  valve.

Radjanair  :  Please  dont  feel  that  I  am  picking  on  you  or  anything  but  you  should  have  continued  this  conversation  in  your  other  previous  thread  which  covers  similar  topics.  This  is  considered  good  forum  etiquette  so  that  all  the  information  is  together  in  one  thread  only  and  is  easy  for  others  with  similar  questions  to  refer  to.

A  dual  stage  regulator  is  prefered  mostly  when  you  are  using  a  fire  extinguisher  cylinder  for  your  CO2  which  ahs  a  tube  inside  it  that  goes  to  the  bottom.  Because  of  this  when  the  cylinder  is  almost  over  it  causes  all  the  remaining  gas  to  rush  out  at  a  faster  rate  which  might  kill  your  fish  in  case  a  single  stage  is  used.  If  using  a  double  stage,  this  does  not  happen.

I  would  suggest  going  for  a  single  stage  with  needle  valve.  Yamato  is  a  brand  that  is  good  value  for  money  and  quite  reliable.

In  solenoids  I  would  personally  avoid  Techno  as  I  have  had  leaking  problems  with  2  of  them

Which  regulator  are  you  using,  inconsistent  rate  is  mainly  due  to  problem  with  regulator  or  a  faulty  needle  value.
Double  stage  regulator  are  always  better  than  single  stage,  they  prevent  the  phenomena  known  as  "Co2  dump",  this  happens  when  Co2  cylinder  is  nearing  end  as  already  explained.

As  suggested  by  Bro.  Saikumar,  Hyd.  I  am  affixing  the  photos  of  the  co2  cylinder  and  needle  valve  I  am  using  now.   Please  suggest  which  regulator  with  solenoid  valve  will  be  suitable  to  my  3kg  co2  cylinder.

Please  stop  using  such  an  arrangement  immediately,  using  a  co2  cylinder  without  regulator  is  very  dangerous.
Co2  is  filled  at  very  high  pressure  about  58-60  kg/m2,  the  output  required  in  tank  is  about  1  kg/m2.
The  regulator  is  built  to  handle  this  pressure.
Needle  valves  are  never  meant  such  high  pressure,  maybe  it  is  already  damaged.
