 Hi,

I  am  visiting  Goa  this  weekend  and  I  want  to  start  a  simple  40  gallon  marine  aquarium  next  month.  I  intend  to  keep  Clown  fish  and  chromis  and  a  Bubble  tip  anemone  if  possible.  My  Question  is,  Can  I  get  the  beach  sand  from  Goa  to  use  it  as  a  sand  bed?  If  so,  what  are  the  precautions  I  should  take?

 Thanks..

If  you  can  get  WHITE  sand  that  itself  is  aragonite,  remember  to  wash  it  like  crazy  and  treat  it  with  bleach  and  then  dechlorinate,  let  this  dry  in  the  sun  for  a  few  days  and  then  try  to  use.  To  be  safe  dont  add  any  expensive  fish,  start  out  with  mollies  (acclimate  them  first)  and  if  they  do  well  get  clowns  etc.  Ofourse,  buying  live  sand  is  a  much  better  option,  reduces  your  effort  substantially,  washing  sand  is  not  fun  lol.  Live  sand  will  cost  you  XX  per  kilo.

 Do  people  really  do  that?
I  mean  collect  beach  sand,  wash,  bleach,  dechlorinate  and  use  it  for  marine  setups.

Also,  where  would  someone  pick  up  aragonite  sand  from  a  beach  in  India?

 Regards,
 Venkat

People  abroad  do,  and  i  think  someone  with  a  tight  budget  here  would  also.  White  sand  is  aragonite.
I  have  currently  called  for  a  few  sacks  of  white  sand  from  konkan  for  MMLR  and   LS

 Beg  to  differ.

"white"  sand  is  NOT  aragonite.  beach  sand  may  look  white  on  konkan  beaches  when  it  is  dry  but  it  is  still  silica  sand  not  aragonite.

Please  do  update  on  where  in  konkan  you  are  getting  this  aragonite  sand  from.  I  havent  seen  it  yet  on  any  of  the  beaches  i  have  visited.

 Regards,
 Venkat

 @Harish  the  OP.

you  can  use  beach  sand  after  washing  but  it  tends  to  compact  easily.
If  you  are  only  putting  it  in  for  aesthetic  purposes,  use  a  thin  layer.

Goa  sand  is  larger  grained.  Obviously  avoid  the  busy  beaches.  Too  much  diesel  and  other  pollutants.

 Regards,
 Venkat

Thanks  everyone  for  the  suggestions.  Beach  sand  sounds  penny  wise  pound  foolish  now..   I  have  decided  to  go  with  aragonite  sand.
Can  anyone  suggest  a  good  LFS  in  bangalore  where  I  can  get  aragonite  sand  from?

 Thanks
 Harish
