I  guess  the  sheapest  would  be  to  go  for  a  fire  extinguisher  cylinder  and  regulator  from  them.  Even  wholesale  medical  stores  keep  the  regulators  for  oxygen  tanks.

Quote:
Regulators  used  for  O2  and  Co2  are  completely  different  .  Do  not  use  one  for  the  other.....

Never  knew  they  are  different.I  thought  a  regulator  is  a  regulator  whether  O2  or  CO2.  Can  you  please  throw  more  light  into  how  its  different....?Will  be  usefull  for  everyone.

 Lets  be  logical  now  :
 Co2  or  O2  -  ┬áboth  gases.
Efficiency  of  a  O2  regulator  -  Better  than  Co2  as  a  O2  leak  can  be  explosive.
Difference  in  O2/CO2  on  contact  with  air  or  while  passing  through  the  regulator  -  CO2  freezes  when  released  at  extreme  bubble  rate.  We  never  do  that  in  a  planted  tank  unless  you  wanna  make  a  soda  bottle  out  of  it.

Can't  think  of  anything  else.  My  belief  would  be  that  the  reverse  would  not  be  a  ideal  thing  to  do  as  a  co2  regulator  won't  be  safe  enough  for  a  O2  tank.

Please  check  the  regulator  fitting  size  and  check  if  you  will  need  adaptors  to  fit  them.
Also  if  you  plan  on  using  solenoids,  please  check  if  you  get  them  for  O2  type  regulators....

Finally,  I  got  no  idea  how  much  these  o2  regulators  cost.  My  guess  was  that  they  are  produced  on  a  massive  scale  and  so  with  large  scale  production  and  many  Indian  companies  in  that  segment,  you  probably  have  more  choices  and  the  price  would  be  less.  Anything  with  an  aquarium  tag  on  it  will  naturally  increase  the  price.  You  will  have  to  do  some  research  before  buying  it  though.  Let  us  know  if  its  cheaper  and  others  can  think  about  it  next  time  they  wanna  purchase  something  similar.

And  the  only  reason  why  I  am  recommending  this  is  because  you  want  a  economical  solution.  Its  easiest  to  buy  the  whole  kit  for  Co2  and  you  do  not  have  to  worry  about  anything  else.

just  digging  up  an  old  thread  http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=11260&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=regulator&start=0

 Please  checkout  Trevor's  answers

Finally  I  didn't  buy  the  O2  cylinder.  As  you  have  also  mentioned  I  found  it  simpler  just  to  buy  the  whole  CO2  setup.  I  am  now  the  proud  owner  of  a  7Kg  and  a  6Kg  cylinders

Thanks  for  the  Info  Unni.........  It  saved  some  searching  time  for  me  to  answer  chichlid_lover.............

I  like  Trevor's  last  line  .....  "  Using  a  O2  cylinder  and  O2  regulator  for  Co2  gas  is  like  putting  diesel  in  a  petrol  car.  It  may  work  for  a  very  short  time.   Chuckle  "

Chichlid_lover,   if  you  really  think  logically  ...........  If  O2  regulator  could  be  used  for  CO2  and  O2  regulators  cost  less  than  a  CO2  regulator,  why  would  certain  reputed  companies  manufacture  both  regulators,  since  everyone  could  now  just  buy  a  cheaper  O2  regulator   ?!  THey  could  just  tell  all  their  customers  to  go  for  O2  regulator,  instead  of  CO2  since  they  are  also  cheaper.  They  sure  would  have  thought  logically  before  manufacturing  both  types  of  regulators,   didn't  they  ......  Smile

 Regards
 Prabhu

you  may  consider  buying  a  bigger  cylinder  (  as  it  saves  a  lot  of  time  &  Money  during  refilling).  depending  on  your  location,  you  can  supply  both  tank  from  a  single  cylinder.

it  will  be  cheaper,  if  you  can  find  a  second  hand  complete  set.  keep  looking  on  different  forums.

 Good  Luck

The  best  shops  to  hunt  for  co2  cylinders  are  shops  that  keep  welding  systems.
Co2  is  used  extensively  for  welding,  but  they  are  normally  in  15,  30  kg,  however  you  can  get  a  smaller  cylinder.
It  should  come  with  a  pressure  test  ring  on  its  neck.
You  can  also  hire  a  cylinder.

A  second  hand  cylinder  from  a  welding  shop  would  be  the  worst  thing  to  ever  consider,  IMO.  Those  guys  suck  the  last  bit  of  it  before  they  sell  it  for  second  hand.  I  wouldn't  consider  it  safe  to  buy  from  welding  shops.  Most  of  them  are  kept  on  the  floor  and  they  keep  rolling  it  on  the  floor.  Finally,  they  would  just  paint  it  and  sell  it  to  some  unknowing  customer.  Big  risk  IMO.  Better  to  buy  from  some  hobbiest  who  is  migrating  to  marine  or  shifting.  I  did  sell  mine  for  almost  half  the  price...

Saw  the  old  thread  regarding  O2  cylinders.  It  deals  with  using  a  co2  regulator  on  a  o2  cylinder,  which  might  be  tough  as  Trevor  said.  But  O2  cylinder+  O2  regulator  -  Just  not  clear  from  that  thread  why  its  not  possible(Except  the  diesel  and  petrol  comparison,  I  do  not  see  any  logic  written  out  for  it  not  working).  Seen  many  western  forums  where  people  have  used  it  successfully..Anyone  any  thoughts  on  this????

My  advise  would  be  to  save  money  and  buy  a  genuine  Co2  kit.  But  someone  good  in  DIY  should  let  us  know  if  its  really  possible  to  do  it(o2cylinder+o2  regulator)  Experts  opinion  needed....

Please  do  not  go  and  buy  the  O2  cylinder.  We  are  just  trying  to  find  out  if  its  possible  or  not.  Just  a  debate  going  on.....Its  just  my  nature  right  from  school  -  I  don't  get  satisfied  just  because  someone  says  that's  the  way  it  should  be  done.  Always  try  to  ask  the  question-  what  if  ,  why  not  the  other  way......

what  is  the  price  diff  between  co2  and  o2  clyinder  ?.  You  can  get  a  3  kg  co2  for  about  3  k,  how  much  does  a  similar  o2  cylinder  cost.
Whixh  western  website  recommends  use  of  o2  cylinder  for  co2,  please  give  link

I  am  not  talking  about  welding  joints,  but  about  shops  that  sell  welding  equipment,  nor  am  I  talking  about  second  hand  cylindrers.  Anyway  whether  you  buy  new  or  second  cylinder,  get  it  tested  before  using,  after  testing  a  metal  sleeve  is  put  on  neck  of  cylinder  and  it  also  gives  the  date  on  which
Testing   has  to  repeated.  These  are  very  highpressure     systems,  so  be  careful

We  cannot  use  O2  cylinders.  Reason  :  As  according  to  Indian  Standard  the  O2  cylinders  comes  with  inside  threading  whereas  a  Co2  cylinders  comes  with  outside  threading.  Even  if  you  get  O2  with  O2  regulator,  there  will  be  no  one  to  fill  your  cylinder.  As  most  of  refill  stations  differentiate  the  2  gases  seeing  the  threading  they  have.  I  am  sure  they  will  not  be  kind  enough  nor  would  they  have  time  to  change  the  nozzle  of  their  cylinder  just  to  refill  one  cylinder.

That  makes  sense.  I  guess  the  difficult  part  would  be  getting  it  refilled.  Thanks  Ruchit.

As  to  the  question  about  who  recommends  using  them,  I  don't  think  anyone  would  recommend  using  them  over  co2  cylinders.  The  only  reason  to  do  that  would  be  if  you  already  have  a  O2  cylinder  or  you  wanna  go  for  a  cheap  solution.  O2  cylinders  "may"  be  cheaper  due  to  Large  scale  production  and  they  do  not  have  the  aquarium  brand  on  it.  The  cylinders  used  in  medical  are  normally  kept  clean  and  safe  due  to  the  explosive  nature.  So  might  be  a  second  hand  would  suffice.
