I  want  to  upgrade  from  an  internal  filter  to  canister.  How  do  I  punch  holes  in  acrylic  hood  for  the  inlet  and  outlet?  What  tools  do  I  use?

You  can  use  a  normal  drill  and  use  the  drill  bit  used  in  wood  works.  If  you  need  a  bigger  hole,  you  will  have  to  use  a  hole-saw  bit.  But  be  sure  to  drill  it  very  slowly,  or  else  the  acrylic  will  break/chip  easily.

What  is  the  thickness  of  the  acrylic  sheet  using  in  the  hood?

USe  a  regular  drill  bit...and  this  is  what  I  had  done..to  punch  a  few  holes  for  placing  screws.
Place  a  small  piece  of  wood  beneath  the  place  on  the  hood  where  you  need  a  hole.
Hold  the  wood  firmly  and  ask  someone  to  hold  on  to  the  hood  and  start  drilling  in  intervals...the  wood  is  placed  to  reduce  vibrations  across  your  hood.
Once  you  get  a  decent  size  hole  ,  then  probably  you  can  slowly  round  of  the  edges  and  increase  the  diameter...

To  get  a  bigger  hole  a  drill  attached  to  hole-saw  will  only  give  you  a  clean  cut.  Use  a  low  rpm  drill  or  cordless-drill  and  apply  very  less  pressure.

@  Deepak  -  lol  -  I  know  that  was  stupid  to  ask  (saw)  ....what  I  meant  was  are  there  any  other  alternatives??  I  had  once  messed  with  a  hood  earlier  using  a  drill

@  All  -  thanks  for  the  inputs.  I  will  give  another  try  using  the  method  suggested  by  you.

Last  time  I  had  borrowed  the  drill  from  a  carpenter  and  used  the  drill  bit  provided  by  him.  Maybe  lack  of  experience/too  much  of  force,  it  just  cracked  the  hood.
I  am  still  using  the  hood....feviquick  ka  kamaal  Wink.
This  time  maybe  I  will  try  experimenting  on  a  separate  acrylic  piece  before  trying  on  actual  hood.
I  am  thinking  I  will  buy  a  drill.  Everytime  I  have  to  punch  holes  for  screws/other  purpose  I  have  to  take  it  to  LFS  and  they  charge  whatever  they  like.  The  same  applies  when  I  have  to  punch  holes  in  wall  for  household  needs  like  for  shelfs/portraits  etc.

Any  suggestions  on  what  drill  to  buy?  Even  a  complete  tool-kit  would  do.

 Thanks  Gopi.

Any  good  place  to  buy  in  Mumbai?  I  may  visit  Lohar  chawl  when  I  go  to  town  next  time.  Any  good/reliable  stores  there.  Otherwise,  I  will  buy  it  locally  or  online.

I  am  not  from  Mumbai  so  I  wouldn't  know.  Smile   But  in  the  page  I  directed  you  to,  there  is  a  store  locator  where  you  can  enter  your  city  name  and  get  a  map  showing  you  the  stores.  Or  you  can  email  them  at   Customercare.india@bdk.com  .

As  mentioned  use  a  drill  but  at  SLOW  speed  to  prevent  the  acrylic  from  melting  and  cracking.  Black  and  decker  drills  can  be  picked  up  pretty  much  anywhere  these  days.  Try  you  local  hardware  shop  around  the  nearest  train  station

How  thick  is  the  acrylic?  If  its  1/4  inch  then  its  not  easy  to  poke  a  hot  rod  through  it.  I  have  worked  extensively  with  acrylic  (  see  Downloads  section  where  I  have  posted  a  DIY  Acrylic  Tank  article)  and  it  is  quite  a  tough  material.  The  best  way  to  make  a  hole  through  which  to  pass  tubes  for  an  external  filter  or  sump  is  to  use  a  hole  saw.

Yep..the  acrylic  is  not  that  thick...maybe  1/4  of  inch....

Btw,  on  my  way  home  yesterday,  I  stopped  by  at  a  supermarket  for  some  grocery  and  call  it  my  luck  the  supermarket  had  32%  discount  on  exactly  the  same  kit  mentioned  in  the  link  with  a  9  piece  screwdriver  kit  free  free   Clapping  I  picked  it  up  without  any  hesitation.

I  will  provide  updates  if  I  manage  to  drill  a  hole  or  a  big  HOLE
