Hi  guys

Im  in  the  process  of  setting  up  a  planted  tank  (discus  if  possible)  and  haven't  even  budgeted  yet.

Any  pointers  on  how  much  it  will  cost?  Ballpark  figures  will  help

2  x  any  five  digit  number  is  good  for  starters.

Fudging  numbers  seems  to  be  a  national  past  time.  Smile
Every  one  seems  to  be  hiding  numbers  from  somebody,  but  do  they  themselves  have  a  idea  how  much  they  are  spending.
I  am  sure  that  there  a  sumber  of  ways  costs  can  be  cut  down  without  compromising  on  quality.
One  way  I  have  discovered  is  that  do  not  buy  complete  sets  from  any  LFS.
If  I  buy  only  glass  aquarium,  then  hood,  lights,  gravel,  I  can  cut  down  substancially.
This  is  my  experience  and  might  not  be  valid  for  everybody

I  brought  in  my  first  BIG  tank  when  my  folks  were  away  holidaying  in  Chennai.  They  still  remember  the  instance  of  coming  face  to  face  with  it  as  the  "biggest  shock"  of  their  lives.  From  their  I  resorted  to  smuggling  fish  into  my  house.
And  now,  underpricing  all  of  my  fish  when  enquired  Wink

These  fish,  can  turn  us  into  such  liars  and  unscrupulous  people  !!!    Chuckle

I  guess  most  of  us  suffer  from  what  I  call  "Grab  Mentality".  You  see  a  nice  fish  or  a  nice  equipment,  you  just  want  to  grab  it  immediately  as  though  there  is  no  tomorrow,  and  whether  or  not  you  really  need  it,  or  if  you  have  the  place  for  it.  And  this  is  probably  what  crashes  our  'Fish  Budgets'  time  and  again,  and  very  soon  we  stop  making  one.  I  too  have.

 Regards

 Suby

My  mom  would  be  surprised  to  know  that  you  people  are  spending  so  much  money  on  aquariums......

 because,
As  far  as  my  parents  know  ,  my  tanks  are  made  from  the  extra  waste  glass  that  my  friend  bought  for  his  windows,  the  gravel  from  some  construction  site  ,  driftwood  from  the  tree  in  front  of  my  house...and  ...  fish  from  friends  mainly  and  rarely  i  buy  them.  So  when  i  buy  them  ,  the  oscars  cost  me  around  20  rs  a  pair,  20  rs  a  flowerhorn  and  snails  and  the  plants  are  complimentary  gift  from  the  LFS  people  wher  i  buy  the  oscars  and  stuff.

Well,  One  of  the  purposes  of  this  thread  is  to  discuss  the  financial  aspects  of  our  hobby.
I  for  one  belong  to  "PMFT",  Poor  man's  fish  tank,  and  s  such  always  looking  to  optimise  efficency  &  minimise  costs.
However  even  1"  oscar  cost  at  least  4  times  the  cost  you  have  mentioned

In  the  photography  word,  there  is  a  term  for  Nikon  users  :  NAS  (Nikon  Acquisition  Syndrome  )..  Yes  I  am  also  into  photography  and  had  this  syndrome  for  a  while    Crying or Very sad  (  so  you  can  easily  understand  my  wife's  condition      Shocked  )
We  can  also  find  something  similar  term  in  this  hobby    Thumb Up

Well  nice  thread  going  on  here!
Just  yesterday  I  had  a  phone  call  from  my  client  that  he  was  comming  to  pick  up  the  fish  he  had  ordered  and  requested  me  that  he  would  quitely  put  the  money  somewhere  on  my  desk  and  I  should  only  count  it  after  he  leaves  -  as  he  is  accompanied  by  his  beloved  wife!    ROFL
I  narrated  the  incident  to  my  wife  and  she  proudly  shot  back  -  "see  how  lucky  you  are"    ROFL
I  have  to  forcefully  stock  only  black  carry  bags  for  my  clients  as  90%  of  them  will  ask  for  only  'black'  carry  bags!  -  the  reason  behind  this  is  smuggling  fish  is  easier  in  an  opaque  carry  bag!
well  since  we  are  talking  of  budgets  -  I  would  like  to  add  that  there  is  a  very  good  aquarium  software  that  I  bought  from  a  company  in  Germany  it  is  known  as  'aquarix'  -  this  software  has  a  complete  budgeting  option  right  down  to  the  operational  cost  of  even  electricity  charges  per  tank!
The  species  profile  is  also  fantastic!
You  can  download  a  demo  version  of  the  software  from
 here

Looks  like  a  good  software  !    Chuckle  ,  But  there  is  a  HUGE  problem  ,  My  wife  Fiddles  with  my  PC    often  ,  and  if  she  opens  the  Software  and  Finds  out  how  much  i  spend    for  this  hobby  ,  then  i  think  iam  in  BIG  trouble  !!

Dont  you  Think  ????  Surprised    Surprised

 Regards
 Raghu

You  can  download  a  demo  version  of  the  software  from
 here

Nauzer....  I  think  we  could  make  a  book  'Fish  Humours'  from  your  shop...        this  is  really  funny    Chuckle

A  little  give  and  take  is  recommended  here.
Let  your  better  half  splurge  on  something  (which  happens  pretty  often)and  immediately  after  get  whatever  aqua  stuff  you  need.  The  guilt  factor  keeps  the  peace    Chuckle

As  for  budgeting,  I  keep  a  ballpark  that  I  can  just  exceed  and  then  go  ahead  and  exceed  it...  Smile

It  is  like  any  woman  will  tell  you  that  all  men  are  the  same!  Let's  say  all  wives  are  the  same!
They  want  their  husband  to  believe  that  marrying  them  is  the  smartest  thing  that  ever  happened  to  us!  ROFL    ROFL

 You  bet!
I  could  write  volumes  on  'Aquarium  humour'  -  it  is  really  interesting  to  interact  with  clients  -  I  actually  know  most  of  my  clients  personally  and  we  even  sit  down  and  joke  and  chat  about  fish  keeping  and  sometimes  even    Drinking
I  make  it  a  point  that  I  invite  all  my  regular  friendly  clients  for  a  yearly  party  sponsored  by  Aquascapes!  (that  is  a  no  budget  party  and  we  all  make  merry  till  early  hours  of  the  morning!)
 I  owe  them  atleast  a  good  get-to-geather!
