|
|
Hi marine experts,
I was wondering, do turbo snails eat brown algae? the one that covers rocks and all other stuff? or just green?
and if not, WHAT do they eat?
Also, do they need any extra dosings, like adding of trace elements, or strontium, iodine, etc.
And what special care if any, should be taken?
Regards,
amod. |

Turbo snails are algae eaters but they don't eat long hair algae.
They don't require any trace element additives but are sensitive to high nitrates and bad water conditions. Regular water changes will be necessary.

But the brown (one that looks dirtiest!) algae isnt long hair algae right?
So will it eat that? Because its causing havoc in my tank!

If the hardiness of the snail is a concern, you may collect a few from any of the rocky shores, ones typically from tide-pools that are exposed during the low-tide. You may need atleast about a dozen of them as they go to sleep for long and the same time could be compensated by other snails.
They leave back a very interesting zigzag pattern of the uneaten algae on the glass.
PS - Regular siphoning of the substrate would be mandatory for their many many tiny wastes.
