Great  report  Nayak.  Some  new  territory  explored.  Most  of  the  streams  are  dry  by  this  time  of  the  year.  I  would  say  Oct-Nov  is  also  a  good  time  of  the  year  to  collect  in  those  parts.  Also,  you  could  check  the  streams  along  the  Karwar  -  Kaiga  road,  right  next  to  the  Kadra  back  waters.

 Eagerly  awaiting  the  further  report.

 Regards,
 Humaid

Humaid,  you  are  correct  regarding  Nov-Dec.  If  time  permitted  we  had  intentions  of  covering  part  of  karwar  and  Kumta.  But  concentrating  on  the  backwaters.  Maybe  next  time  along  with  you  guys  Very Happy

 Continued.....

Rahul  and  Madhu  moving  upstream  into  rapids.

By  now  the  time  was  10.30am.  And  the  blazing  Sun!

Trying  to  avoid  Sun  stroke.  Madhu  as  Fishwaroopam(As  he  named  himself)

The  catch  in  the  shade.  It  must  easily  have  been  35ºC  by  now.

Lovely  Black  rocks.  we  collected  some  of  these  and  some  golden  brown  sand.  Essentials  for  a  Bio-tope.

 Downstream  view  of  the  Habitat.

 Upstream  a  check  dam.

Back  to  the  serious  business  of  collecting  fish.

 The  Rapids.  Netted  us....
 Mastacembelus  armatus
 Schistura  altipedunculata
 Mystus  cf.  bleekerii
 Acanthocobitis  botia
 Macrobrachium  sp.

Chasing  the  fishes  into  the  net.  Hazardous  business.  All  of  us  had  bleeding  toe's  by  this  time.

Time  was  12.30pm.  We  only  had  a  cup  of  coffee  and  four  Parle-G  biscuits  since  5.30am  in  the  morning.  By  now  our  belly  was  begining  to  think  our  throat  had  been  slit.  That  hungry,  we  were.
Look  at  the  expression  on  Madhu's  face.

 To  be  continued....

Jaiby,  Not  fair.  IAH  belongs  to  all  of  us,  and  if  it's  a  bit  rustic  it's  our  duty  to  make  it  more  interesting.  I  have  seen  you  at  the  ASK  meet  explaining,  how  to  tie  Java  moss.  Inspite  of  your  expertise  you  took  the  time  to  educate  a  new  enthusiastic  member.  That  is  the  spirit  of  IAH!

 Regards,

 Continued.....

Tried  the  next  town  in  Goa  for  Lunch.  Every  hotel  was  a  Bar  and  Restaurant  and  to  top  it  all  at  1.00pm,  no  lunch.  All  they  had  was  pav  Bhaji,  Vada  pav  and  Liquor!  We  needed  rice,  period!  Being  shunted  from  one  bar  to  another  we  came  across  a  small  shack  with  a  advert  "  Meal  is  ready".  And  what  a  meal  it  was,  though  cause  of  our  hunger  and  the  heat  we  did  not  do  it  justice.  Fantastic  fish  curry  rice  later.....Another  problem.  Rahul  and  madhu  contacted  Hydrophobia!  Finishing  the  hearty  meal  all  they  saw  was  3/6',  the  afternoon  siesta  bed  I  mean.  But  the  slave  rider  that  I  ever  was,  no  let  up  from  my  side.....

The  next  habitat,  a  water  canal.  The  sides  grown  with  water  weeds...

The  next  proper  collection  point,  time.....  2.45am,  the  Buffalo  Egret,

And  the  Buffalo's  themselves,  preventing  the  bravest  among  us(  namely  Rahul)  exploring  the  bacopa  Sp.  thicket,

Time  3.00pm.  Temp,  approx  38°C  and  madhu  cooling  off  by  washing  his  face.  Trust  me,  by  now  the  rigor  was  trying  our  stamina!

 The  habitat  down  stream.

 The  habitat  upstream.

The  Fishchasers©  find  a  promising  cove....

Trying  for  luck,  more  than  with  conviction...

The  only  viable  find,  Utricularia  graminifloria

Time  4.00pm.  Deciding  to  call  it  quits  for  the  day,  headed  for  Colva  via  Ponda.

 Continued....

Our  room  on  the  Colva  beach,  in  a  hotel  called  Gracino  cottage.

A  walk  on  the  Colva  beach.  It  is  almost  the  end  of  the  season  in  Goa  and  majority  of  the  birds  had  flew  back  north  to  Russia.  Even  then  there  was  no  dearth  of  bird  sighting  Halo

Checking  what  the  tides  have  washed  ashore.

 The  Sunset.

Watching  the  Sunset,  in  a  pensive  mood.  I  don't  know  about  you  guys.  But  there  is  something  inherently  sad  and  forlorn  about  any  Sunset.  Might  be  because  it  signals  the  end  of  another  day  in  our  lives?  A  day  that  will  never  come  back?

Thanks,  Ruchit.  Yes,  Bio-topes  are  a  intersting  subject.

 Continued.....

A  couple  of  beers,  Amboti's  and  Xacutti's  later  we  were  in  ZZZZZZ  land  when  a  loud  noice  woke  us  up.  A  thunderstorm!  Started  at  2.00am  and  lasted  till  6.30am.  Poured  water  literally  on  our  plans  of  a  early  morning  dip  in  the  Arabian  sea.  Vacated  the  rooms  at  7.00am  and  whent  to  check  out  the  fisherman's  catch.

 The  silence  after  the  storm.....

But  no  fishing  the  earlier  night  due  to  the  storm.  All  the  watercrafts  were  stowed  away  from  the  waters  and  the  wharf  was  deserted.
Rahul  with  our  next  transport  for  Fishchasing.  Wishful  thinking?

The  dessipating  storm  clouds.  In  Sepia  and  in  Color  Very Happy

On  to  the  next  habitat.  A  small  river  estuary  near  a  beach.

The  view  of  the  beach  from  near  the  estuary.

Teeming  with  Killifishes.  Madhu  catching  some.

A  Vodka  bottle  floating  along.  Talk  about  garbage!

 The  catch?  Aplocheilus  kirchmayerii

 The  Fishchasers©  checking  another  ditch.

Cleaning  up  the  nets  in  the  sea  water.  That  estuary  had  sewage  from  the  nearby  town.

Rs50/-  worth  of  assorted  catch  from  a  fisherman.  For  Rahul's  formalin  collection.

And  a  fish  Louse  added  free.  Yuck!

 To  be  continued.....
