 To  continue....

10.45am.  No  breakfast  till  now,  on  the  third  day  too.  Finally  saw  some  benches  in  a  shacky  place  called  Mario  bar.  Rahul  went  for  a  food  recce  and  came  back  with  the  news  that  they  had  Pav-Bhaji  only.  And  wonders  of  wonders,  no  liquor  in  the  premise.  Finally  decided  to  rough  it  out.  To  tell  the  truth,  Bhaji  was  good  and  hot.  But  the  Pav,  made  when  the  Halley's  comet  last  passed  Earth!

The  next  habitat,  15  mins  drive  from  the  "Mario  Bar"

 Upstream  of  he  place.

 Dravidia  fasciata  in  it's  habitat.

A  better  view  of  the  habitat.  But  this  prestine  habitat  won't  last  long,  they  had  a  pumping  station  being  built  here.

A  view  downstream.  The  water  was  pretty  murky  here,  the  rains  were  pretty  heavy  the  previous  night  in  the  Ghats.

A  couple  of  Dravidia  fasciata  and  Pethia  setnai.  see  them?

No?  I  have  highlighted  them  for  you  Very Happy

 Also  saw,

Pio,  Thanks.  Inspite  of  being  a  regular  to  Goa,  this  is  the  first  time  I  had  fished  here  too.

 To  continue....

On  to  the  next  habitat.  Driving  into  the  interiors  from  the  coastal  plains  we  started  entering  the  foothills  of  the  Western  Ghats.  Time:1.30pm

This  small  lane,  only  a  black  and  white  picture  could  do  justice  to  this  rustic  scene.

Came  across  a  slow  moving  stream  with  a  lot  of  aquatic  plants.

 Another  plant.  Any  ID?

A  submerged  Eriocaulon  Sp.  giving  out  flowers.

Found  a  fern  growing  submerged.  Aquatic  or  Bog?

2.00pm.  Walking  cross  country  came  across  this  temple.

 The  habitat  near  the  Temple.
Madhu  and  Rahul  trying  their  luck.  The  water  was  too  murky  to  see  anything.  The  unseasonal  rains  had  messed  up  all  our  plans.

Walking  away,  I  came  across  this  naturally  aquascaped  layout  Smile

A  close  up  of  the  lovely  bouquet  of  Limnophila  Sp.

A  bevy  of  tadpoles,  D.fasciata,  P.setnai  and  some  A.lineatus  filled  the  quota  of  Fauna  in  this  paradise.

 Continued.....

By  now  it  was  3.15pm  and  our  belly's  were  growling.  Headed  back  to  the  same  Fishcurry  rice  hotel  we  had  been  to  previous  day.  after  a  hearty  meal  headed  back  to  Dandeli.

6.30pm.  Madhu  in  the  hotelroom,  all  exhausted  after  three  days  of  fish  chasing.

The  packed  fishes,  after  a  water  change.

The  Macrobrachium  Sp.  in  the  water  bottles.  They  had  punctured  enough  plastic  covers  already.

After  a  Dinner  of  Dosas  and  Noodles  retired  for  the  day.  That  roadside  Noodles  was  a  fantastic  lubricant.  By  5.00am  next  morning  there  was  a  queue  outside  the  Loo  for  quick  release.  No  mishaps,  thank  the  stars.

Vacated  the  room  by  6.00am  and  we  were  on  our  way  back.  Two  Kilometers  out  of  Dandeli  we  ran  into  thick  fog  which  lasted  until  we  reached  the  Bangalore-Pune  highway.
A  few  pictures  for  you  to  visualize  the  hazardous  drive  in  zero  visibility  on  horrible  roads.

 6.30am  to  8.00am.

My  car  on  the  road  with  the  Headlights  on  Highbeam  and  Hazard  lights  on.

Sunlight  finally  filtering  out.  Clcked  by  Madhu...

And  the  Final  picture.  The  three  Fishkeeters.  The  only  picture  with  all  three  of  us  together.

After  hitting  the  highway  we  came  across  the  fog  bank  again  near  Hubli.  Just  out  of  Chitradurga,  my  temperature  gauge  started  acting  erratically.  Opened  the  bonnet  only  to  find  the  Coolant  cap  cracked  and  all  the  coolant  drained  off.  Used  the  river  water  collected  in  the  bottles  for  waterchanges,  and  filled  her  up.  Drove  carefully  with  regular  stops  to  check  the  Coolant  level.  No  Mishaps.  Reached  Bangalore  at  5.30pm.

Phew!!!!  That's  all  from  me  Folks.

 Regards,

This  is  how  it  pans  out  for  me.

Nayak/Rahul  mail  about  tentative  dates,  places  and  start  planning

Me  -  Start  cursing  'Cant  these  fellows  plan  it  just  a  week  earlier/later  '   Mad
The  actual  fact  being  I  wont  be  able  to  go  even  if  they  did  change  the  dates.

Then  the  guys  start  and  call  in  the  evening  and  say  -  'Hey  Deepak,  we  caught  these  fishes  and  had  awesome  time'
ME  -  'jf*(:  Now  they  are  rubbing  salt  on  my  wound'

Once  they  get  back,  I  start  waiting  for  this  kind  of  thread.  Each  snap  shouts  at  me  saying  'You  could  have  been  here!'.  And  add  Nayak's  narration  Punch
 Me  -  'GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR'

 So  what  to  do?
I  used  to  go  through  the  above  cycle  (I  still  do  Sad)  and  then  keep  waiting  for  the  same  thing  to  happen  again.

But  I  made  a  small  change  sometime  last  year.  I  started  exploring  places  which  are  near.  Go  out  and  get  back  by  noon/evening.  If  I  go  out  with  family,  plan  few  hours  on  exploring  nearby  water  bodies.  And  join  in  whenever  I  can  make  it.  This  has  worked  out  much  better.

To  members  who  kind  of  think  that  such  outings  are  not  possible,  start  it  in  a  small  way.  If  you  dont  get  any  company,  just  go  alone.  These  outings  are  stress  busters.  Try  it  out  sometime  and  you  wont  regret.

Coming  to  the  main  thing  -

 Nayak,

Where  are  the  snaps  of  the  'FREE'  fishes  you  guys  got?

Only  Kordon  makes  breather  bags  as  it  is  a  patented  product.

If  you  have  breather  bags  there  is  nothing  as  safe  as  it.   Only  thing  is  you  can't  pack  spiny   fishes  in  it.   In  a  std.  8x4  bag  you  can  easily  have  4  2-2.5"  barbs  and  with  the  size  of  the  fish  do  the  math.   Rest  is  all  in  the  breather  bag  manual.
Fishes  get  shit  scared  when  you  catch  them.   So  a  water  change  after  2-4  hrs  almost  becomes  a  must  or  there  will  be  ammonia  burns  for  sure  and  the  fish  can  easily  rot  its  tail  &  fins.
If  you  have  breather  bags  pack  half  of  it  with  water  with  no  air  space  between  and  tie  it  with  no  leaks.
If  you  use  ordinary  plastic  bags,  make  sure  you  have  water  not  more  than  2-3  times  the  height  of  the  fish  and  air  space  for  about  80%  of  the  volume.
Its  always  better  to  carry  sufficient  2  litre  bottles  to  bring  water  from  the  biotope  itself.   Make  a  water  change  using  the  water  collected  and  1  water  change  after  2-4  hrs  from  collection  time  can  make  the  fish  live  for  the  next  8  hrs  and  then  a  2nd  water  change,  they  can  live  for  24  hrs  for  the  rest  of  the  journey  without  a  need  to  make  a  water  change.   Only  thing  is  make  sure  the  temperature  doesn't  shoot  up  as  low  volume  of  water  gets  heated  very  quickly  under  direct  sun.
Do  not  pack  too  many  fishes  in  1  bag.   Max  of  4-6  depending  upon  the  size.   If  the  fish  is  anything  above  4"  just  one  fish  per  bag.
Never  put  shrimps  &  fish  together.
The  above  could  certainly  guarantee  close  to  0%  mortality  provided  you  used  gentle  ways  to  catch  the  fish.   If  you  see  a  fish  upside  down  or  gasping  in  a  bag  of  multiple  fishes,  make  sure  to  remove  it  ASAP  as  if  it  is  dead  it  could  spike  ammonia  to  very  high  levels  in  very  little  time  and  eventually  kill  the  rest  of  the  fishes  in  the  bag.

Awesome  report  Nayak.  Enjoyed  the  entire  Journey.   Smile   Hope  to  do  a  trip  along  some  day.
Please  post  the  pics  of  the  fish  once  they  settle  down.

Where  do  we  get  these  breather  bags?  and  are  these  suitable  for  labyrinth  fish  as  well?

 Regards,
 Humaid
