Chuckle  ...  I  have  only  one  thing  to  tell  you  "Dude  run  before  the  marine  hobbyist  comes"....

You  cant  start  a  Marine  tank  with  a  budget  of  5K  As  far  as  I  know.

Don't  put  yourself  in  it  unless  you  got  enough  of  the  most  important  thing  you  need  for  marine  "MONEY"

Don't  waste  your  5k  on  a  setup  that  is  going  to  fail  and  in  the  process  end  up  killing  some  livestock.

If  anyone  has  a  "budget  for  a  marine  tank"....they  shouldn't  even  bother  in  the  1st  place  with  one..

If  you  say  "i  am  a  newbe  i  want  to  start  with  a  small  tank  and  may  be  later  ill  setup  a  big  tank"  that  98%  never  happens.

Since  its  a  small  tank,  and  your  new  to  the  hobby  it  will  be  difficult  to  maintain  water  parameters..

 Here's  what  I  suggest..

Save  the  5000  and  later  on  when  you  have  about  500000,  you  can  setup  a  large  tank....

Hello!  Budget  marine  is   definitely  possible.  Have  done  it  for  a   friend.
My  first  tank  is  a  10  gallon  coral  reef  14*12*15.   Have  just  added  the  frags  ,  set  the  tank  up  in  december  and   so  far  it  has  been  easy  to  maintain
 For  your   tank
10-15  kilos   of  aquacultured   live  rock
 10-15  kilos  live  sand
 LED  floodlights  are  good  IME
And  a   few  powerheads,  filter  for   running  carbon  and  ideally  a  refractometer  which  can  be  purchased   for  1XXX  off  eBay.
Experts  please  correct   me  if  im  wrong  Smile

I  too  want  to  setup  a  budget  marine  tank.
The  following  is  my  poor  man's  marine  experiment.
I  have  a  2  feet  x  1  feet  x  1  feet.  It  has  real  seawater  from  the  sea,  sand  from  wet  part  of  beach  and  just  2  Kg  of  live  rock  I  managed  to  get  from  LFS.
Inhabitants  are  30  Turbo  snails,  10  filter  feeding  hermits,  30  +  assorted  small  snails  and  6  acclimatised  black  molley.
It  is  running  for  past  2  months.  Before  I  added  the  mollys,  there  were  plenty  of  pods  in  it.  But  now  none  are  seen.
I  top  up  ordinary  tap  water  when  the  water  level  drops.

Got  a  protein  skimmer  cheap  (the  kind  that  runs  with  a  pump  and  airstone.  It  broke.
Purchased  a  wavemaker,  this  resulted  in  a  sandstorm.  Not  using  it  now
 Just  ordinary  powerhead  filter.

My  friend  had  a  tank  for  2  years.  He  had  2  wavemakers,  an  external  canister  filter  and  LED  lights.  He  kept  clownfish,  damsels,  green  carpet  anemones.

Now  I  want  to  know  how  to  make  a  DIY  sump  so  that  I  can  have  a  refugium  and  put  a  skimmer  in  it.

Sripad  you  are  the  first  ever  person  whom  I  have  heard  saying  this,  other  than  a  LFS  guy.
I  have  few  questions  to  see  if  it  was  my  wrong  perception  about  marine  hobby  being  expensive.
My  questions  will  be  more  in  a  way  comparing  Freshwater  with  salt  water
 1.  You  mean  to  say  that  he  don't  need  a  good  filter::  Even  for  a  good  planted  tank  this  is  critical.  I  heard  most  marine  people  keep  a  sump  as  baseline  which  is  by  far  the  most  effective  filtration  methods  in  FW.  This  itself  will  cost  atleast  1.5K  with  the  pump  and  the  sump  tank  and  filter  media
 2.  Protein  skimmer:  The  little  I  have  read  says  that  this  is  needed  in  keeping  the  tank  stable  and  that  is  again  atleast  1K  (Say  somebody  gives  a  huge  discount)
 3.  Good  lights:  I  heard  Marine  lights  need  to  be  even  better  than  that  for  planted  tank.Even  if  I  forget  that  point!!  any  method  of  making  light  will  come  to  another  1K.If  you  are  too  good  at  DIY.
 4.  Wave  maker:  The  few  powerheads  you  said  will  atleast  be  some  500  right.
 5.  The  salt  +  sand:  Is  this  thing  dead  cheap  that  you  will  get  15  Kg  of  each  together  in  less  than  1500.  If  so  then  good.
 6.  Display  tank:  SInce  he  has  it  ok  lets  leave  the  cost.
 7.  Distilled  water:  I  dont  think  you  can  add  all  the  salt  and  keep  all  the  parameters  in  check  with  tap  water.  As  far  as  I  know  marine  tank  is  much  more  sensitive  than  FW.  Even  for  FW  some  people  due  to  poor  water  quality  end  up  using  distilled  water.
 8.  Cooler:  For  coral  reefs  I  think  the  water  should  be  cool  and  for  that  even  if  you  are  going  to  do  with  fans  I  beleive  it  will  come  to  another  500  to  1K....

There  are  lot  of  things  I  missed  and  all  the  prices  I  said  is  dream  price  and  still  i  doesnt  end  up  in  5K.
Please  explain  how  it  ended  up  in  less  than  5  K  for  you..........
Also  As  you  have  already  said  you  have  had  the  tank  Set  only  on  december  which  is  less  than  3  monce....
Dude  you  have  not  yet  reached  the  shore,  of  the  sea  you  are  going  to  take  a  dip  and  you  are  pulling  some  body  else  to  the  unknown  waters.......  come  on!!!!!!!!
