Amazonian I think that was call as a fish holding tank and not a marine tank.
Yes you can try to make it as economical as possible initially with a few gift from friends but down the line when things start to fail you will end up investing in better equipments.
For a FOWLER u don't need a sump u can live with an external canisters for HOB.
Can get a Reef octopus hang on skimmer and work for a nano or smaller tank but that itself is going to cost u closer to 10k. So budget yes, but not in 4 digits :)
Been there done that, killed, wasted - now investing heavily into equipments.
Equipments are you key to running a successful tank and even If u DIY like I do, it is not cheaper.
The best way to start an economical marine tank is, as a fowler with just a pump and canister. Later replace one by one and buy expensive equipments and slowly go from fowler to reef based on your fund supply :)
And please not DON'T add sea sand they have silicate in them and will slowly leach into your tank to spurt your Algae out of control and u can't do a thing to control it. Go bear-bottom or use aragonite sand (again investment). Bear bottom is the best currently. |

wow.. a great refresher...
Just put up things a bit simpler...
I did have a budget (about 15X you mentioned) for my marine....and it turned to be an yearly one.....
The one you suggest to start with- is it the weekly one?
Read, learn, speak, learn, see, learn....there are many in here who can guide you and help you...
pls take informed decisions... you are playing with lives |

@MarineMania not sure what was that but it was pretty decent and nice looking but algae problem was there. I think what experts are saying is correct and it was just an example of low budget tank. I will not suggest anyone to do it if you are not staying near seaside and can take pain of cleaning algae manually.
It looked good though and fishes/inverts were quite agile and looked fresh
The octopus was not there probably dead or eaten by some guest |

FOWLR tanks are cheap, dont think of reef tank.... if your tank is kept in a dark area, far away from sunlight, and if its minimum 60g with high surface agitation, fans and led lighting, you might not require a chiller, but you will require an auto top off device, since evaporation will be fast.... fishes like chromis, ocellaris clowns, damsels are the only cheap fishes available.... LR, 1" of sand max is enough, + low bioload... i had a 20g cube fowlr for 2yrs, housing jus 1 damsel and 1 chromis, i never had any issues.. refractometer is a must buy.. So in a 60g, no more than 6 fishes, would be enough. u might not require a protein skimmer, jus a 25% WC monthly... if u going for a reef tank then you will need chiller and skimmer or ATS if your good at diy... |
