Hi,  I  am  having  CRS  in  a  nano  with  plants.
What  would  be  ideal  filter  for  46  cm  x  23  cm  x  23  cm.
 Currently  using  sponge  filter.
Is  it  sufficient  or  would  a  small  HOB  be  better?

 +1  gorothmaan.
HOB  would  be  too  powerful.  I  actually  don't  even  put  filters  for  my  nano  shrimp  tanks  and  do  daily  10%  water  change.

 garothmaan  :  Thanks  mate.

navneethtk  :  Really  difficult  doing  10%  water  change  daily.

I  am  using  boyu  U4500  airpump  with  spong  filter  which  gives  strong  bubbles  as  it  a  small  tank.
No  speed  setting  on  the  pump.  Can  I  use  a  T  connector  and  split  it  for  using  in  2  nanos?

Also  would  like  to  know  which  is  better  filter  on  working  principle?  Sponge  or  HOB?

yes  you  can  however  the  best  will  be  the  daily  water  change.  as  far  as  working  is  concern  HOB  is  far  ahead  considering  their  cost  which  is  on  the  higher  side.

If  I  do  daily  10  %  or  alternate  days  20  %  water  change,  then  no  filter  is  needed  at  all?

Just  do  alternate  day  water  changes.  Water  changing  is  better  than  filteration  as  the  shrimps  grow  much  faster.  My  shrimplets  are  adult  size  in  two  months.  Very Happy

You  can  use  a  controller  (tap)  for  air  flow.  between  the  pipe.

HOB  filter  is  not  a  good  option  for  shrimps  tank  how  ever  if  you  can  put  some  additional  sponge  near  the  inlet  so  that  shrimps  can  not  go  inside  then  that  would  be  good.

For  CRS  tank  only  sponge  filter  is  not  enough  as  they  required  crystal  clear  water.  I  would  suggest  to  put  a  small  canister  (use  for  nano)  in  your  CRS  tank.

if  a  tank  is  cycled  properly  and  regular  water  changes  are  done,  then  a  sponge  filter  should  be  quite  satisfactory  and  suffecient.

 Dr.,
As  a  general  rule,  sponge  filters  are  not  a  good  idea  for  a  planted  aquarium.  Sponge  filters  are  generally  used  for  bare  bottom  tanks.
A  HOB  filter  is,  in  principle,  the  same  as  a  canister  filter.  HOB  filters  are  smaller  &  designed  for  small  tanks.  however,  the  choice  of  filter  depends  on  a  few  other  things  as  well.  If  you  have  CO2  injection  (especially  yeast  reactor),  then  an  HOB  is  not  such  a  good  idea.  The  surface  agitation  will  result  in  loss  of  CO2.  If  you  have  CO2  cylinder  system,  then  you'll  have  to  increase  the  flow  rate  of  CO2  to  compensate  for  the  loss.  However,  if  it  is  a  non-CO2  tank,  then  a  HOB  filter  is  actually  a  good  idea.  The  surface  agitation  will  actually  induce  certain  amount  of  CO2  from  the  atmosphere.

The  advantage  of  HOB/canister  is  well  known.  All  the  media  that  filters  the  water,  bio  filtration,  etc.  etc.  Get  a  HOB  filter  that  is  right  for  your  tank  in  terms  of  flow  rate.

Not  having  filtration  may  be  a  risk,  especially  in  a  nano  sized  tank.  Things  could  go  awry  in  a  flash!  Surprised

 My  two  bits...

PS:  as  Abhi  suggested,  do  a  search  on  the  forum  beforehand.  I'm  sure  there  is  more  than  one  thread  on  this  subject.  We  are  not  really  assured  of  expert  advise  if  we  keep  asking  the  same  questions  again  &  again.  They  get  tired  of  answering  the  same  things.  Sleep

@DRDHEEP  ...  Very  Nice  start.   Thumb Up  Could  you  provide  some  details  of  this  nano  tank  setup.

I  want  the  details  of  (Tank  size,  Substrate  used)  .  and  do  you  use  Co2  setup  in  CRS  tank?  what  u  feed  your  shrimps.?

 Please  post  the  pics.

1  more  advantage  of  sponge  filter  is,  that  you  can  remove  it  daily  for  cleansing  and  insert  it  for  new  filteration.

This  also  helps,  because  you  are  throwing  out  the  dirt  accumalated  by  the  filter.  +  Sponge  is  the  only  media  to  be  cleaned.

Many  hobbyist  have  forgotten,  that  daily  cleaning  sponge  filter  helps  a  lot  in  keeping  the  water  clean,  and  the  %  of  water  changes  will  decrease  also.
