For  example  shrimps  need  a  tds  under  200.   The  gizmo  tells  the  tds  of  the  water.

I  wish  you  were  my  neighbour...  do  those  stuffs  cost  a  bomb.?  I  know  they  are  cheap  in  the  us  though.I  think  the  easiest  way  of  checking  the  tds  is  to  cal  some  aquaguard  or  kent  guy  for  water  purifier  and  they  will  come  to  your  place  with  that  stuff.  You  just  have  to  pretend  that  you  just  gave  him  some  genuine  tap  water  you  drink  everyday...  its  something  which  you  probably  won't  check  frequently.  Its  either  usable  or  not  usable  and  you  know  what  to  do  if  the  water  is  high  in  tds.

Guys,  I  know  It  measures  TDS  (Total  dissolved  solids),  my  brother  is  a  RO  filter  dealer.  He  once  checked  our  ground  water  with  this  meter  and  it  showed  800+  TDS..  I  had  even  asked  about  it  on  IAH  by  posting  a  query.  But  could  not  get  a  conclusive  answer..  So,  when  I  saw  this  post.  My  curiosity  was  aroused  in  anticipation  of  an  good  answer..
As  for  the  cost  of  it..  My  brother  said  it  was  available  for  around  Rs.1k..

The  results  can  be  quite  shocking  at  times  with  these  meters.  943  mg/L  was  the  reading  on  my  HM  TDS  3  meter  when  I  checked  my  tap  water  with  it!   That’s  almost  approaching  brackish  standards!

 Nidhi,

Hanna  is  a  bit  expensive,  at  around  3  times  the  rate  you  mentioned  with  Taxes.  So  definitely  not  worth  if  you  have  only  couple  of  aquariums.  I  would  agree  with  Cichlid_lover's  method  of  getting  your  water  checked,  if  you  need  the  data  only  once.  The  only  drawback  being  you  will  not  know  when  the  TDS  has  changed  and  the  freqency  of  change.
As  for  me,  I  am  facing  some  issues  in  my  fishroom  which  I  will  detail  later.
I  replied  TDS  to  your  earlier  post  because  that  is  what  I  am  starting  from,  and  then  will  go  into  the  rest  of  the  gamut  of  water  chemistry  later.

 Regards,

True,  Swarnendu.  Handling  it  carefully  and  doing  regular  calibration  is  a  must.  In  my  case  especially  so,  since  I  will  be  using  it  in  my  new  Professional  venture  too.

Nayak,  if  you  are  going  to  go  whole  hog,  you  can  get  in  touch  with  orlabs.
They  have  good  quality  test  kits,  I  got  water  hardness,  alkanity  &  nitrate  kits  from  them.  They  come  with  their  own  nice  carry  bags,  test  tubers,  beakers  etc.
This  along  with  a  ph  pen  &  TDS  pen  gives  me  a  nice  grip  on  water  parameters.

 Sandeep,

Thanks  for  the  information.  I  think  I  am  through  with  any  more  purchases  since  I  have  all  the  testing  tools  now  Smile

All  right,  I  have  a  confession  to  make.  The  reason  I  am  going  for  all  this  is  because  of  the  draught  in  Karnataka  and  the  severe  water  shortage  we  are  facing  in  Bangalore.  Depending  for  water  from  tanker  delivery  guys,  I  have  no  clue  where  they  are  getting  it  from  and  what  are  the  properties  of  water  I  am  getting.

And  like  all  of  us  here,  my  fishes  are  precious  to  me  Very Happy

 Regards,

Second  you,  water  parameters  hold  key.  Cauvery  water  supply  in  my  area  has  halved  and  tankers  are  required  often.   Sad
